Based in Moscow and St. Petersburg artists; 1-я exhibition took place in March 1895 in the halls of the Historical Museum. 16 Aug 1895 approved the Charter, according to which the objectives of the society was declared to "promote the development of historical painting in Russia" and "the device exhibits paintings, sketches, watercolors, drawings, prints, sculptures, executed by authors of the present time, on topics of General history, historical genre, sacred and Church history, mythology and views of historic places and monuments in Russia and abroad...". The first Chairman of the Board of management was A. A. Karelin, 1900-1906, this position was occupied K. N. Gorsky. The society was under the patronage of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich.
Among the works first presented to the public in the exhibitions of OHIG, was such films as "Moscow street XVII century holiday," "the Seat of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich with the boyars in his public room" A. P. Ryabushkin (1-я exhibition, 1895), "King of Prussia Friedrich-Вильгельм III with sons is grateful to Moscow for saving his state" . S. Matveev (2-я exhibition, 1896) and others. In the second exhibition, which was shown not only in Moscow but also in Nizhny Novgorod, along with Russian artists was represented by a group of Munich painters: O. Seitz, A. Keller, F. Ude, F. Pieces.
the Exhibition was accompanied by a detailed directory the historical review A. V. Yavorsky. In 1898 it had 36 full members.
