from a family of small merchants. Initial artistic skills acquired in the district school in Zadonsk. In 1865 he moved to Moscow. One and a half years engaged in the icon-painting studio. In 1867, he enrolled in MUZhViZ, studied with VV Pukireva and Perov, enjoyed the patronage of the School Inspector KA Troutovsky. In 1870, for the painting "The Drunkard" has received a cash prize. Summer 1870 held at the home, where painted "Murder on the high road", for which he received a scholarship and workshop from MUZhViZ, as well as on the application of management of the school was exempt from levy of service. Also received a scholarship from the KT Soldatenkova, the means which made long-term trip to Russia. In 1874, a sketch for the painting "The Robber Brothers" on the story poem Pushkin received a cash prize. In 1875, for the painting "in the ashes" was awarded a large silver medal. At the end of 1870 traveled to Russia, collecting material for the film "After the hail" ( "Peasant in the field"). From 1884 he lived in Moscow. Participated in exhibitions MUZhViZ (1872-1887, with interruptions). He was a member of the Board of the Society of Artists of historical painting, party of two exhibitions of the Society (1896, 1898). In 1891 he organized the exhibition of one painting "No mercy" in the halls of the Moscow Society of Art Lovers. In 1908 he held a personal exhibition in Moscow.

In the 1900's the figure he gave lessons in his studio and private homes. He worked as a book and magazine illustrator. In 1906-1913 worked in the publication of "Diary of a Writer (from 1910 -" Torch and the diary writer "). He performed the illustrations for the works of R. Kipling (1909), AV Zhirkevicha (1915-1916). Was close to the theatrical environment. He created portraits of actors LN Gate (1893), D. Garin-Vindinga (1905), FA Pravdina (1912), a caricature of actor B. ; Andreeva-Burlaka (1880).

In 1910-s engaged in the restoration of temple murals and ceilings. In 1910-1913 participated in painting the dome of the writer's name NA teas in Kostroma Province, in 1912 - the Iberian Chapel ceiling in Red Square in Moscow. Member exhibitions Bogoliubov a drawing school and the Kazan Art School.

Yakovlev - a little-known but nevertheless notable representative of the genre painting of the second half of the XIX century. In his work was close to the Wanderers, has been influenced by teachers - Pukireva and Perov. The works of the artist's characteristic narrative, a pronounced critical aspect, the drama of the story ( "On the conflagration," 1875; "After the hail," 1884; "In the quiet of the monastery", 1896), and some of them, on the contrary, marked by good-natured humor ( "Moving the artist's new apartment, 1889).

Creativity Yakovlev represented in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus in Minsk, Ivanovo Regional Museum of Art and others.
