Painter, graphic artist

from a merchant family, the son of artist-lover. General education in the German Peter & Paul School in Moscow. Studied at MUZHVZ (1872-1881) as a student at volnoprihodyaschego Sorokin and Vasily Perov. In 1878, a sketch, and in 1881 for drawing from nature small awarded silver medals. In 1882 he was promoted neklassnogo (free), painter. In the early 1880 attended the evening drawing in Repin's studio.

lived in Moscow. In the 1880's repeatedly visited the Crimea, visited Gurzuf, Yalta, Evpatoria, Bakhchisaray, Sevastopol. He worked in the field of historical and genre painting, painted landscapes, portraits, to book illustration.

Since 1877 - participant of exhibitions (student's, MUZHVZ). Exhibited his work at exhibitions TPHV (1887-1906), the All-Russia industrial and agricultural exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod (1896), the group "United Arts" (OBIS, 1925). Member and exhibitor of St. Petersburg (Petrograd), Society of Artists (1891-1917, with interruptions). One of the founders and secretary of the Society of Artists of historical painting (1895-1898). Member of the Moscow Society of Art Lovers (since 1901), the Union of painters in Moscow (since 1919).

Consisted art critic in the newspaper "Russian piece" (1900-e). The author of critical articles on art and books, "100 paintings by Russian artists" (Moscow, 1904-1905), "Moscow and life in it before the invasion of 1812" (Moscow, 1912).

in 1918 was a member of the Commission for the Protection of monuments and art treasures at the Council of Workers 'and Soldiers' Deputies. In the last years of his life engaged in the restoration of paintings.

Matveeva works are in several museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Museum of the History of Religion in St. Petersburg and others.
