son of the Polish artist and teacher Vladislav Bakalovich and actress Warsaw Philharmonic Quiz Shimanovskaya. Original art education was under the leadership of his father. He studied at Warsaw drawing class, took lessons from B. Gerson. In 1876-1881 he pursued his studies at IAH at VP Vereshchagin. At the same time he took lessons from Pavel Chistyakov and B. Matejko in Krakow. During the period of study took all existing academic awards: in 1877 - two small silver medal for drawing from life and studies, in 1878 - a large silver medal for the sketch, in 1879 - a large silver medal for drawing and a small silver medal for the sketch arrangement "Death of Germanicus". In 1880 he was awarded a small gold medal for the program "Jacob learns clothes for his son Joseph, sold by his brothers in Egypt. In 1881, for the painting "St. Sergius blessed Dmitry Donskoy in the battle and lets him two monks "was awarded a large gold medal, received the title of class artist of degree 1 and the right to a pensioner's trip abroad for five years.

In 1882-1887 pensioner IAH in Paris, Rome, Algiers. In 1886, over represented in the Council of the Academy of painting "The neighbors", "The Roman poet Catullus reads his poems to a friend", "Evening Talk" was awarded the title of academician. At the end of pensionerstva remained in Rome. Repeatedly traveled to countries in Western Europe and North Africa, particularly in Egypt.

In his works he preferred subjects ancient Roman history, mainly the nature of the genre, settled in line with the salon art of the time. He painted also portraits, landscapes, copies of paintings by old masters. Engaged etching, turned to pastels and watercolors.

took part in academic announcements (1884-1897, with interruptions), exhibitions of Moscow Society of Art Lovers (1887/1888 and 1891/1892), Saint-Petersburg Society of Artists (1891-1913, with interruptions; 1900 - Member of the Society), Society of Artists of historical painting (1895, since 1895 - Member of the OHIZH). The exhibit also at the All Arts and Industrial Exhibition in Moscow (1882), international art exhibitions in Berlin (1886, 1891), Munich (1892) and others. He was a member of society to promote Fine Arts in Warsaw "Zachęta" (since 1903). In 1914 the artist was denied in the device's personal exhibition in St. Petersburg. In 1921, held a solo exhibition in Rome. In 1930 participated in the mug to promote young artists "Capitol" in Rome.

Bakalovich - one of the most significant artists of the academic art of the second half of the XIX century in Russia. His paintings - this is mainly multi-figured compositions, characterized by clarity of construction, shop drawing precision, careful prescription details, attention to the effects of natural or artificial light, bright saturated color.

Bakalovicha works are in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum, the Scientific Research Museum of Russia Academy of Arts and others.
