ARTinvestment.RU publishes excerpts from the annual report Artprice.com
French resource artprice.com published a report on the outcome of the auction in 2009. In preparing that analysis, we used data on 5.4 million sales results, obtained from 3,6 thousands of auction houses. ARTinvestment.RU presents readers excerpts from the text of this report.
correction in prices on the art market
in 2009 - m, as we know, the art market "sobered up" and recovered from the speculative fever, which peaked in 2007. In that year the global price index Artprice was as much as 15 percent higher than in 1990 (the culmination of the previous art-boom). But after the collapse of Lehman Brothers in September 2008, the art market caught a disease of the world economy: buyers began to refuse to purchase the work of bloated prices. As a result, in the second half of 2008, the number of unsold lots increased to 43%(with an average of 30-35%). To cope with this problem, the auction houses were forced to cut their estimate: in early 2009 in the directories of trades have already been given new "crisis" preliminary estimates. Among the other "bailouts" - staff reductions auction houses (Christie's, for example, fired 20%staff), the association of departments, reduction of reserve price (in December 2008, the same Christie's announced a 10 per cent retrenchment), reducing the number of catalogs and put up lots, as well as virtually full disclaimer to the seller, without which the home was very difficult to get very expensive product.
Compared with 2007, in 2009, the number of papers brought to the bidding amount more than a million dollars, decreased by 59%(as in a segment of contemporary art and altogether 77%). But these numbers are impressive, if only to keep for reference during the peak period: should also be borne in mind that last year's seven-digit sales was twice higher than in the early 2000's.
Global auction revenue decreased by 3.7 billion dollars (compared with 2008) and amounted to only half of the amount received in 2007. With regard to national markets, the hardest hit Britain, lost 1.9 billion. Revenue from U.S. auctions fell by 1.6 billion.
prices began to stabilize in the second and third quarters of the year, and in October the market began to show signs of recovery. In the second half of 2009, buyers have found 37%of products (vs. 40%in the first half).
crisis has not spared the market of expensive works: last year from 10 to 100 thousand dollars worth 14%of lots (as in 2007 - 22%). The number of more accessible works, up to 5 thousand, was 75%(11%more than in 2008).
view of the decline of interest in contemporary art, whose prices have been growing during the boom most active, improve the old masters and modernists. Revenues from sales of works of contemporary artists dropped from 16 to 10%of world income, while the old masters rose from 6,8 to 12,5%, while the modernists - from 44 to 48%. Modern Art took it only 12%higher segment of the market (lots more expensive than 100 thousand dollars). For two years - from January 2008 to the end of 2009 - prices for such work fell by 40%. Auction houses have significantly reduced the number of lots, as well as longer display of very expensive work of artists who have become market leaders thanks to speculation. For example, the number offered for auction works by Subodh Gupta (Subodh Gupta) decreased five times. A number of studies Banksy (Banksy), Richard Prince (Richard Prince) and Damien Hirst (Damien Hirst) has fallen by two thirds. Of course, this affected their annual income: same Gupta, for example, in 2009, "earned" up to 95%less than in 2008. Proceeds from the sale of works of Japanese "king of pop art" by Takashi Murakami (Takashi Murakami) decreased more than 10 times. Afraid, however, do not: the market "Contemporary" just returned to the level of 2004. Plus - that contemporary art is once again became available: the number of works less 5 thousand increased by 13%and amounted to almost 74%of the total "actual" market.
Fashion Chinese artists at which during the boom was a huge demand, affected the same way as their colleagues from other countries. Sales of works of Wang Guangya (Wang Guangyi) decreased by 75%, Mintszyunya Yue (Yue Minjun) - 84%, and Zhang Xiaogang (Zhang Xiaogang) - at 86%. But the renewed interest in classical and modernist Chinese art, which often buy collectors from China, rather than "international speculators." But abstractionists Chu-Qun (Chu Teh-Chun) and Cao Wu-Ki (Zao Wou-Ki) increased their income by 6.3 million dollars each. The successes of the Chinese art market, we will be back.
«Auction century»
main event of the year, without doubt become Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge , which is "responsible" for 30 of the 80 million sales in the first quarter of 2009, as well as four places in the top ten of the best auction results. These trades have confirmed unfading masterpieces of the museum's demand for a class. Were set personal records for the works of such recognized masters as Henri Matisse (Henri Matisse), Constantin Brancusi (Constantin Brâncuşi), Piet Mondrian (Piet Mondrian), Giorgio de Chirico (Giorgio de Chirico), Marcel Duchamp (Marcel Duchamp), James Ensor (James Ensor), Theodore Gericault (Théodore Géricault) and Paul Klee (Paul Klee). All lots were sold for 480 million dollars, of which the art of "cut off" 265 million.
Records Old Masters
July 7 auction of works by old masters Christie's had set three personal records. But Sotheby's, held a day later, he was overtaken: a record amount yielded nine works, among which the painting "Woman selling game in the shop" Gabriel Metsu (Gabriel Metsu), pushed for 1.16 million pounds sterling . But the real triumph of the old masters happened at the end of the year: on November 22 at the Beijing Poly International Auction Buyer laid out 22.1 million dollars for work "Eighteen Arhats" brush calligrapher Y Bin (Wu Bin). She became the most expensive in the history of graphic art. However, the record did not last long: Dec. 8 drawing of Raphael's Head Muses "was sold at Christie's for 42.7 million dollars . The product also turned in second place in the ranking of the most expensive works of old masters. On the same date was set yet another personal record: Rembrandt "waist men standing with arms akimbo" went for 29.5 million dollars. Of course, the numbers are impressive, but do not forget that the percentage of unsold works in this category remained high: at Sotheby's on December 9 new owners found only 60%of work. Buyers in the past year were more than ever, picky.
unexpected result
most successful auction of contemporary art, without a doubt, become Sotheby's Nov. 11 , whose revenues totaled 117.1 million dollars - substantially higher than the preliminary assessment. And this is thanks to one artist: Andy Warhol (Andy Warhol). His "Self-Portrait" brought 5.4 million dollars (five times the pre-assessment ") and" 200 dollar bills "- all 39 million. Estimeyt for the product was quite a crisis: 8-12 million.
Countries
the first place for auction revenue were the United States. Trades in this country brought the total amount of 1,3 billion dollars. For America to be the United Kingdom, in which the transactions were carried out at 1 billion. These countries "responsible" for 49%of global sales. The decrease in these markets in 2009 due to the fact that Christie's and Sotheby's have decided to cut the number of lots (34 and 47%respectively). As a result, Christie's income fell by 57%(compared with 2007), and Sotheby's has lost 60%. Two giant auction market are responsible for only 10%of transactions, which, however, give 60%of total revenues.
auction revenue in China last year grew by 25%to 830 million dollars. This, incidentally, 17,4%of world sales (in 2008 this figure was more modest - just 7.7%). Five works of Chinese artists included in the rating of Top-10 graphic works, ahead of the creation of Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Francisco Goya. native of the Middle Kingdom, a favorite of Picasso Baixo Qi (Qi Baishi) took third place in the list of the most successful artists in the auction market .
Indicator France increased by 31%due to the same "bargaining Saint Laurent, which gave 40%of the total income (265 million dollars from 665 million). With their profits the French branch of Christie's rose by 300%to $ 330 million. But the Sotheby's auction came to the rescue of 59 million - 33%less than in 2009. In third place was the auction house Artcurial, «earned" 40 million. This is followed by Millon - Cornette de Saint-Cyr (29,6 million dollars), Piasa (17,7 million) and Claude Aguttes (17,6 million).
Most works on French art market are available: 89%of transactions are made with the works of 10 thousand dollars cheaper. "The speculative boom in the region nearly untouched. It's on its pros and cons of that before ... Every year France hands over more and more products to China, and last but not least because of its auction market is too tightly regulated: the various administrative (including customs) procedures, taxes and related formalities, VAT on imported works ... Oct. 28 last year, the French Senate approved a bill on deregulation of the market, it is expected that Parliament would pass a law early in the second quarter of this year. In Asia, the buyers of art, the region is very attractive: for example, there are no customs duties for products imported into or exported from it, in addition, the commission the buyer does not exceed 12%, regardless of the price of the lot (for work cheaper than 500 thousand dollars in Europe and America auction houses ask the average 20-25 %).
Top-10 artists on auction income
This year, the total "earnings" the most quoted artists in the market amounted to 654 million dollars. This is a two-thirds lower than in 2007 (when sales were $ 1.84 billion) and a billion lower than in 2008, but still more than in 2004 and 2005 (576 million). The cheapest "entry ticket" in the rating last year was worth 40.39 million dollars (in 2008 - 91,8 million).
also left a list of contemporary artists. The Last of the Mohicans "- Andy Warhol, who, frankly, is more properly called a" classic "rather than" aktualschikom. Damien Hirst, in 2008 ranked fourth , in 2009, down 44-e. Between 2002 and 2008, our contemporaries ever win a place in the ranking - in 2003, for example, in tenth place he found himself Gerhard Richter (Gerhard Richter), in 2005 and 2007 in the list came Jean-Michel Basquiat (Jean-Michel Basquiat).
Most places in the ranking took the master of modernism. Prices for works by Picasso, Alberto Giacometti (Alberto Giacometti), Edgar Degas (Edgar Degas) and Claude Monet (Claude Monet) last year decreased by 55-77%, but the Chi Baixo, Piet Mondrian (Piet Mondrian) and Rafael did not suffer as their first-class works appear at public sale very rarely. In 2008, for example, Mondrian was on the 191-m site (with annual revenues of 6,5 million euros). Prior to record his tracks in blue, red, yellow and black "(auction Saint Laurent) for five years no more than 50 cm at auction was not present.
