born in the family of a retired Guard captain. In 1867-1873 he studied in law schools, first of Kharkov, and then St. Petersburg University. He graduated from University with a degree of candidate of legal sciences. Until 1876 he worked as a lawyer in St. Petersburg. In 1876 he moved to Poltava, where he held the position of assistant prosecuting attorney of the District Court.

Systematic arts education is not received. Since 1877 started modeling. The samples used for copying works of contemporary sculptors: NI Liberiha, EA Lancere, French painter of animals P.-G. Maine. On the advice of GG Myasoedova presented at the 10 th exhibition TPHV sculptural group "on the oxen, and then became a regular participant of exhibitions of the Association (until 1918). In 1891, having received the appointment in the service, arrived in St. Petersburg. In the same year joined TPHV.

In 1894 due to illness had gone to Rome, where he was treated and simultaneously studied museum collections. In 1894 he was elected a member of the IAH. In 1900 appointed a member of the IAH. In the early 1900's created a monument to the poet IP Kotlyarevskogo (opened in 1903), in 1914-1915 he worked on the monument NVGogol for Poltava (opened in 1934). In 1915 he had declined to the title of Academician sculpture "for reasons of principle».

Posen is one of the prominent masters of sculpture of the second half XIX - beginning of XX century in Russia. The most famous became his armchair genre compositions on themes from the life of the Ukrainian people. Also implemented a series of portrait busts and works on historical subjects. In his works he shared the views of artists, the Wanderers, was the first of the artists that joined the Men's Association.

favorite material Posen was wax. Many of his wax models were acquired with traveling exhibitions bronze KF Werfel, and for several decades, casting from them were made in his St. Petersburg workshop. Found out later castings with models of the sculptor, made in the mid-twentieth century.

Posen works are in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, Kiev museum of Russian art, Poltava Art Museum and others.
