According to recent studies, the loss of the French art-рынка already amounted to €184 million

These disappointing numbers were the result of extensive research recently conducted by the French Committee of art galleries (professionalnel Comité des galeries d'art). Representatives of 279 galleries answered questions about the state of their business and the influence of restrictive measures related to pandemic COVID-19.

"I have not heard about any sale from mid-March", — says Marion Papillon, Chairman of the Committee of art galleries. She adds that a sale which, according to the preliminary negotiations had to take place during the last art-ярмарок (TEFAF in Maastricht, the Armory Show in new-Йорке, etc.) have been repealed.

fairs, traditionally held in the second quarter of the year, the galleries usually manage to collect more than a third of annual revenue. In 2019 during this period, the gallery earned about €184 million — 37% of the total annual turnover, but this year, from-за continuing the quarantine, most likely, the gallery will lose this sales.

study Leader Pierre Marin also points out that the gallery business in France, fragile in itself, not even in times of crisis: two-thirds of the galleries are staffed a minimum of two staff, and four out of five represent at least 29 artists.

Only one-tenth of the respondents have an annual turnover of more than €3 million, and more than half of the galleries belong to young companies, open since 2000.

Papillon concludes that the support of the French state, "are insufficient to cope with this crisis."

it is currently known that the Ministry of culture of France in addition to budget support to social Fund for contemporary art in the amount of €600 thousand on purchases in the galleries and €500 thousand to purchase works directly from the artists, promised to pay still €2 million in the form of special targeted assistance to the galleries, art-центрам and independent artists.

the Situation is even more complex in light of recent statistics. According to Artfacts.net starting from 2007 there is a worldwide decrease in the ratio of public/private galleries. If, before the last major crisis (2008) 4 new galleries had just one close, and in 2011-2013, the ratio is stabilized at numbers 2 to 1, in 2018-2019 dropped even lower: 1.2 to 1.

For comparison, after the decline of the European art-рынка in 1994, the situation stabilized in 1995-м. The crisis did not experienced a 46 % galleries.
