The authorship of Zvenigorod questioned

The experts of the Tretyakov gallery claim that icons from Zvenigorod assumption Cathedral on the Town was, apparently, not written by Andrei Rublev, as it was believed, for almost 100 years

At the roundtable, which took place on 21 June in the Engineering building of the Tretyakov gallery, was promulgated results of researches Zvenigorod, held in 2015-2016 experts of the state Tretyakov gallery in conjunction with Gasnier. According to the Director of the state Tretyakov gallery, Zelfira Tregulova, using the most modern methods of research of ancient art has allowed to establish that the proprietary methods of drawing original drawing and blending paints Zvenigorod and other universally recognized icons of Rublev (including the "Holy Trinity") are not the same. Although representatives of the Tretyakov gallery said that the findings were not definitive, the majority of the attendees at the round table experts considered them to be convincing.

Icons Zvenigorod — "Archangel Michael", "Christ Pantocrator" and "the Apostle Paul" — was found in 1918 during the expedition of the all-Russian Commission for the conservation and disclosure of ancient art in Zvenigorod. It's part of the Deesis, consisting of seven or nine icons. The remaining icons were not found. After the restoration Igor Emmanuilovich Grabar said that the Creator of them could only be Andrei Rublev, for "only he has mastered the art of harmonising a single subdue the will of all those cold, pink-сиренево-голубые color, only he dared to solve color problems, were under force only to the Venetians, and then a hundred years later..."

In light of recent studies it is argued that the Zvenigorod icons were written by one or even two artists, belonging to the "Byzantine-русскому" the circle of Moscow painters. And it is certainly not the author of the "Trinity".

Art historian Alexei Lidov vizantolo called it a historic event, because thanks to this discovery we found another one or even two great artists who worked at one time with Andrei Rublev and Theophanes the Greek.
