born in the family of the carpenter's shop. Since August 1769 he took private lessons in drawing and engraving by FE Mattarnovi and H.-A. Wortman. Since August 1740 - Drawing a student, and then Engraving Chambers Academy of Sciences. He studied painting under the guidance of I.-E. Grimmel, engraving - in IA Sokolova. In 1745 sketched "Siberian herb" for academic JG Gmelin. He participated in many collective Engraving Chamber: Illustrating the book "The Adventures of Telemachus" F. Fenelon (St. Petersburg, 1747), album of the funeral of Empress Elizabeth (not published, 1761).

In 1756 was promoted to apprentice. In late 1750 - early 1760-s studied portraiture under the supervision of the master engraver GF Schmidt.

In 1762, together with AA Grekov headed engraving house, but the application for the award of the rank of master was refused. From July 1763 to February 1765 did not work at the Academy of Sciences, but took private jobs. In 1768 - was dismissed.
