"Effect of time: the influence of the Russian avant-garde of modern fashion
A new exhibition, bringing together the avant-garde from museums and private collections as well as costumes ready-to-wear from famous designers, will open at the Jewish Museum and tolerance centre on 29 June
the Exhibition explores the long history of interaction between Russian and Western cultures by juxtaposing the legacy of the Russian avant-garde from the collections of leading fashion houses. Visual Parallels between the works of the classics of the art of the early twentieth century with modern costumes ready-to-wear not only reveal the influence of radical artistic movements to popular culture, but also help to trace the recent history of costume specific borrowing cultural codes of different eras.
ever since the Renaissance fashion had at its disposal a complex system of quotes and metaphors that allows literally to read the suit, is endowed with the meaning of the text. However, in the twentieth century the costume more and more towards pure visual, is increasingly resorting to art as a primary source of inspiration.
since 1960-х designers became interested in graphic simplicity of the work of the avant-garde, borrowing a characteristic especially for the artists of clear geometric and abstract shapes, dimensional composition and the absence of linear perspective. We can say that the influence of fine art on fashion from that time peaked — a work of modern fashion designers of today resemble three-dimensional canvases, sculptures, and more endowed with the value of the artifact.
For centuries, art served as a tool for studying the history of costume. Heritage painting and drawing and later — pictures gives us an idea about the evolution of ceremonial, military, work and other costumes from different eras.
the Exhibition "the Effect of time: the influence of the Russian avant-garde on modern fashion, on the contrary, refers to the history of art through the works of leading fashion houses, which use is similar to the works of Russian avant-garde color and compositional solutions, often resorting to borrowing recognisable forms, decorative details and ornaments.
