Artists in Paris School

Chaim Soutine, Michael Kikoin, Pinkhus Flint

The term "Paris School" was introduced in 1925 by art critic Andre Varna (André Warnod). The concept of united artists living in the famous bohemian district of Montparnasse. On the basis of his own thoughts and opinions, these artists have developed and continued to experiment during the early twentieth century - Cubism, Expressionism, Dadaism, Surrealism. Among the representatives of the Paris School was a lot of immigrants from Russia. The reason that it is Paris became the main center of "Russian Abroad", is clear: the cultural center of Europe, which has successfully conducted the Diaghilev Seasons, an exhibition with the participation of leading Russian artists, fire-Impressionism and Fauvism, attempted to compare the Russian and European artists. Some of our people found in Europe (primarily France), a new home, striving to succeed and reach it. Others, even if successful at home, could not find himself in a strange environment. Paradoxically, today, Russian emigre artists interested in our country and the fact that their artistic style was formed outside the country. In fact, with Russia, they share only a communication environment with the same as they were, and partly the old attitude, which they transferred to a foreign land, became the new homeland.

Works representatives of the Parisian school of interest as for collectors and investors. These works have a number of obvious investment advantages: firstly, there is a long history of (statistics) rating of sales at leading European and international auctions, which gives reliable and well-projected price targets, and secondly, the work of artists of the Parisian school has long taken its place in art history, written about them a lot of books, monographs, art history research; And, finally, creation of the "Russian French - our fellow connoisseurs of Russian art was of particular interest: it is their work can get an idea of which way could develop Russian art, had it not been social unrest, isolationism and dictatorship of socialist realism

We have already written about the work of Nicolas de Stael ; continue acquaintance with the Parisian school. So, Chaim Soutine and friends Michael Kikoin and Pinkhus Kremen .

Chaim Soutine (1893-1943)

Chaim Soutine was one of the founders of French expressionism. In his earlier works noticeably influence P. Cézanne. However, in late 1910 - early 1920's formed an individual creative writing Soutine, who subsequently did not undergo significant changes: he wrote his paintings writhing pasty strokes, often varying the same theme. Changed only the artist's palette. If the 1920's, his works have been built on a combination of green, yellow, red, brown, purple, by the end of the decade spots become larger, and the palette has become more austere and contrast: it is dominated by blood-red, in combination with bright-blue and purple. In the late 1930's lead artist took the green, it interspersed with all other colors, accented by sharp blows of white.

works of Soutine quite rare, as the artist affected by severe depression, often destroying his paintings are not satisfied with the work.

especially popular among buyers Soutine had acquired in 2000's. In the last decade of his auction records follow each other, and the ten most expensive works of the artist are the only things stepped bar for two million dollars. It is noteworthy that the current maximum price for the work of Soutine was recorded in June of this year already: at Sotheby's portrait of a boy "valet" was bought for 7.88 million pounds.

Investments in Creativity X . Soutine only by very wealthy people: investing is only in the best works by the artist, and their score is calculated seven-digit numbers. Work worth several hundred thousand dollars in the market, but they are usually not considered as objects of their money: these things are often late and weaknesses from an artistic point of view. Graphic works of Soutine is very small, and finding them is not just.

favorite genre were Soutine landscape, portrait and still life, and a portrait of Soutine was always under the obvious influence of Modigliani. And in recent years, statistics show, buyers are most attracted to is the portraits, while the second place there are still lifes. Among the ten most expensive works of the artist - the seven portraits and two still lifes. It is in these genres investors should pay attention.

Chaim Soutine, of course, refers to the number of prospective investments for artists. For example, the work of "Siesta" was sold in 2004 for 1,5 million dollars, and in 2010 it re-sold for 2.7 million dollars. Painting "Young Polish girl", which was sold in 2003 for 480 thousand dollars left in June 2006, at Sotheby's for 4.2 million dollars, almost ten times higher than the previous result.

Prices of Soutine grew more than 3.5 times over the past 9 years (Fig. 1), but this is the average of all paintings by the artist. There are things that over this period rose by more than 3-5 times. The index shows that the price level of the works of Soutine had not yet recovered from the crisis and is still below the peak level of 2006, which, however, does not mean the opportunity to buy works by this artist at low prices.

If Ten years ago the sum of $ 10 million was unacceptable even for the best works by the artist, but today it is no surprise. We can assume that even after ten years 20 million so incredible today, will look quite appropriate.

Michael Kikoin (1892-1968)

Kikoin went to Paris in 1912, after studying at art school YM Kruger in Minsk and Vilna Art School. He settled in the colony of young artists in Montparnasse "Beehive", attended the National School of Fine Arts, studio of F. Cormon.

Kikoin actively exhibited in the Salons: Fall, Independent, organized solo exhibitions in galleries Cheron, Likorn (1917), Netter (1924), Bernheim (1927), Biye (1933) and later - in Montpellier, New York, Paris, London and other cities. In 1928 he presented his work at an exhibition of contemporary French art in Moscow.

Kikoin painted landscapes, portraits, still lifes, nudes in the spirit of P. Bonnard and Soutine Kh. Effectively depict the color and sought artistic expression through the imposition of bright colors and games of light and shade. Individuality of the artist revealed in an effort to identify common forms of suffering and dramatic tension.

On the one hand, Kikoin underestimated as an artist, but on the other hand, he still has not received special attention from buyers. Today, his stuff is not sold much more than in 1990. If 20 years ago, oil Kikoin average cost 10-20 thousand dollars, by 2010 this band has shifted upwards to a maximum of several thousand dollars. It's quite strange, since he worked with top artists, not only of the Parisian school, but also of world art. Work of his friend and chief adherent Chaim Soutine cost many millions, and paintings Kikoin have not yet reached, and 100 thousand euros. Price record belongs to the work of "Lying", sold for 80,000 euros in 2007 at auction Sovcom. Top-40 artist's work is in the range of 20 to 40 thousand euros. Graphics Kikoin sold from 500 to 7,000 euros. Special reference to the dating of the story or not (although better pay attention to the still-lifes), the main factor in pricing is the quality of the picture, the skill of its execution.

During the period 2001-2010 cost of M. Kikoin grew on average 8.6 times (Fig. 2), during a crisis the price of his work declined slightly. The peak value of the works Kikoin came in early 2008, preceded by a year and a half of price growth in the 14.6 times.

There are many examples where re-sale of works Kikoin were lower than previous results. For example, the canvas "Seated Woman and a bowl of fruit" (1920) was sold in June 2009 for 13,000 euros, and resold in June 2010 for 10,000 euros. Another work, "Large trees, pushed in October 2008 for 31,000 euros, two years later went to the next buyer at 9,000 euros cheaper. One can cite examples of the reverse. Work "Enchanted Forest" was sold in January 2006 for 11,5 thousand dollars, and in 2008 the bidders broke up the result to 37,8 thousand dollars.

Investing in Creativity Kikoin can be extremely profitable, but they involve a risk of saving the situation in its current state. Interest in the work Kikoin can actively occur when the prices of painters in his circle will become unaffordable for most buyers, or when his work as a result of increased attention to the Parisian school is overrated. In any case, by investing in product Kikoin, the investor will retain its equity: reducing the cost of the works of this artist is almost impossible.

Paul (Pinkhus) Flint (1890-1981)

In 1909-1912 Pinkhus Flint was in Vilna Art School, where he met with Hillary Soutine and M. Kikoin. Arriving in 1912 in Paris, he settled in the colony of young Parisian artists "Beehive", where he met Modigliani, M. Chagall, F. Leger.

In 1914, Flint was first exhibited his sculptures inside the Independent, but a year later left the sculpture and began to work only in painting: painted landscapes, portraits, still lifes and nudes in the spirit of "moderate" expressionism. However, they retained a significant sculptural artist home - flexibility and at the same time monumental forms.

Pictures Flint bought famous marshal, he participated in the cabin and group exhibitions organized by several solo exhibitions. Artist frequently exhibited with H. Soutine, although it sometimes lost against the background (and not always fairly). Nevertheless, today the works of this artist are available even novice collectors and investors.

average price level of the artist today is 7-15 thousand dollars. Record the value of the work belongs to the "Paris street", which was sold in 2006 for 46,000 euros. Graphics available from $ 500 to several thousand.

For 9 years the price level of products Pinkhus Flint gradually grew on average by 2,7 times, a sharp rise was recorded in mid-2008, but the turmoil of the last two years have reduced the result to almost the initial level. For us it is important that in 2010 the price index as smoothly and confidently, as usual, moves up.

the artist is dominated by two themes: still lifes and landscapes, and is the best period 1916-1920's. For example, the work of "Still Life with Fruit and Flowers, pushed in January 2006 over 9.7 thousand dollars, was sold in 2 years for 35 thousand dollars. However, fixed and unsuccessful re-sale.

can confidently say that there are market works Flint: a year sold several dozen of his works. Talk about the steady growth in sales volumes, as it was before the crisis is premature, but the situation is corrected. As is the case with M. Kikoin, investment in art Flint can be very successful, but involve a risk of maintaining the current price range. In any event, today the purchase of works of Flint rationale: no doubt that the price level will rise to pre-crisis values, there is no.
