Russian market: the aftertaste of London

to 6 June in London attended by numerous gallery owners, dealers, collectors and investors to participate in the Russian bid, organized by major auction houses every six months.

Christie's

Traditionally held the first auction auction house Christie's. June 6 last auction brought £ 11.5 million owners of what was perceived with great optimism the participants and the market. Before the auction on the sidelines of sound, that the collection offered by Christies, a little masterpiece and worthy things, so strong results were questionable. But optimists are right were restrained, asserting that the majority will be sold in any way. Trades were active, though without the drama inherent in the "daring" 2004-2007 years. Even a 4.5 million-the result of "Paris Cafe» Ilya Repin ( Fig. 1 ), one of the biggest sensations of the "Russian Week" was not greeted with the usual applause for record sales, though perhaps it was just to welcome the participants of a certain: win an unknown buyer by phone. The canvas was not only the most expensive work of Repin, bought at auction, but also beat the record cost of the works of Russian painting sold at auction under the Russian by international auction houses.

«Paris Cafe" was exhibited at the Paris Salon, and reproduction it is often found in monographs devoted to the works of Repin. Price of just more than three times higher than the price "Portrait of Madame Alice Rivuar with decorative Dog," sold 2 years ago by Macdougall for 1.4 million pounds and is now relegated to second place ranking in the price of works of Repin, in addition, such a price rise (which important, not speculative, and had begun to estimate), with high probability, will greatly affect the growth of the value of works of Repin in general ... What we see: the following after the "Paris Cafe" a lot, graphic work Repin "Sketch for" Paris cafe ": standing Mr. Jean-Leon Gerome, "set a record for graphics and a great artist. So the reason to seriously consider investing in Repin's work, today there is, and investors can obtain substantial income.

over 713 000 pounds, is 2.5 times higher than the lower estimate, painting was sold Boris Grigoriev «Monk." Having a wonderful provenance, made at the peak of the artist's work left most expensive, perhaps a positive role in this case, played by Boris Grigoriev Show Grigoryeva of the Russian Museum . Whatever it was, the new owner, if he decides to leave as soon as possible to the picture, it will be difficult to make, though if you played in the exhibition plus once, why not repeat the success? All the more so as the chart shows the index ARTIMX ( Fig. 2 ), Grigoriev, again in demand among buyers. In general, we can assume that in the near future with the appearance of the artist's masterpieces on the market may be set new records.

unexpectedly expensive out medium-quality oil and the "Cafe in the French port." Estimeyte 30-50 thousand pounds, some buyers started a battle of rates and "catch up" with the result up to 180 pounds (217 000 with a premium customer). For Cow, of course, not the highest score, but the result is impressive. Investing in good jobs Korovin, in most cases justified, because He enjoys great popularity among customers and records on work Korovin constantly updated.

Inexpensive, over 21 thousand pounds, left a beautiful work Gudiashvili Lado «King Rostevan and Avtandil hunting» ( Fig. 3 ). Rather, most market participants were not able to deal with dating. In the catalog of the work was dated 1951 year, and in the notes to the auction said that the error in the catalog and the correct year of establishment - 1931 th. If the auction organizers are right, the new owner is to be congratulated on the successful purchase. Another, much weaker Gudiashvili work in pencil, though, 1921 has left a bit later for 23.7 thousand pounds. In any case, this is a good lesson for buyers: are interested in the work before the auction should always consider carefully.

Particular attention is paid to the individual you want auction results on the works of nonconformist . Metaphysical Still Life "Untitled» Krasnopevtseva went for 79.2 thousand pounds estimeyte 30-50 thousand. Still Life is not one of the best creations of the artist, and the market works Krasnopevtseva in the past few years has been very unimpressive so this result can be viewed as a signal of renewed interest in works of masters.

Sale picture "Mask and dragonfly» Tselkova for 40 thousand pounds, twice the upper estimate, so you can comment : found a cut diamond. Apparently, someone from the collectors wanted by all means get this thing. Another logical explanation for the acquisition of this work for the money are hard to find.

great success with customers enjoyed arts and crafts, which amounted to more than 60 percent of the catalog Christies. 5 out of 10 top-selling auction items provided in this section. For example, a monumental porcelain vase reign of Alexander II, was sold for 421.25 thousand pounds, and the production of snuff Faberge, presented by Nicholas II, Charles Robert Carrington, left behind thousands of pounds 385.25.

In Overall the auction house Christie's to be congratulated on their success. Most of the lots had been sold, and total sales exceeded expectations. Market participants after the auction, Christie's were optimistic and the next day met already on the site Sotheby's.

Sotheby's

Evening auction Sotheby's, according to the testimony of participants in the audience were much more active than at Christie's. Interest rates on some lots were heard in the last seconds before hitting the hammer in the room felt tension.

most popular among buyers of used linen Vasily Vereshchagin . Of the seven works the artist has sold 6, with most of the left much more than the upper estimate. The main triumph in the evening and the most expensive piece in today Vereshchagin was the picture of "Taj Mahal. Evening »( Fig. 4 ), sold for 2.2 million pounds, almost 10 times the lower estimate. Beautiful work midsize unexpectedly exceeded even the wildest expectations. Recall from the April 2007 price rating Vereshchagin led the "Wall of Solomon" (3.6 million dollars), but it was three times more "Taj Mahal ...." The painting "The main mosque in Fatehpur Sikri," also did not leave indifferent participants. Estimeyte 80-120 thousand pounds a few buyers, "broke up" the result to 373 thousand. Only remained unsold work, "Crossing the Shipka", estimated at 300-500 thousand pounds in the thin film is not obvious characteristic Vereshchagin attention to detail - perhaps this is played at a loss. Nevertheless, one does not work the weather, and most likely, soon we will see price increases on all market products Vereshchagin, because Sotheby's auction set up for this solid foundation, but such events are an art community has always met with optimism.

second place in the list of top-selling Sotheby's expected, took a picture Ilya Repin's "Portrait of the artist's wife Vera Repin". This work received the highest preliminary assessment - 1-1.5 million pounds, from the very beginning has been the focus of auctioneers and participants, the result in 1.1 million pounds Hall met quietly, all the "Repin" emotions got the "Paris Cafe", sold at Christie's a few hours earlier.

noted record sales of Constantine Bogayevsky "A fantastic landscape» ( Fig. 5 ); put up for auction with an estimate of 200-300 thousand pounds on canvas was sold at a fantastic price for Bogayevsky - 505 000. Prior to that, the best result for the artist did not belong to a much smaller size picture "Romantic Landscape" was sold in June 2008 for 67 thousand pounds. Of course, a great year, considerable size, the highest quality of work influenced the preliminary assessment of the auction house experts and interested buyers, but the bottom knocked out of the fair market logic. Either this is a whim of several buyers, or a new trend in Bogayevsky and seriously in the near future prices would rise even to the artist's schedule.

perplexing sale of two works Petr Petrovich Konchalovsky , created in 1924 and 1943. The first painting, "Still Life with hollyhocks," estimated at 300-500 thousand, went over 736.5 thousand pounds, taking into account, to say the average quality of work, the result is extraordinary. The second work, "lilac bush," which was the next lot, was sold twice the lower estimate for 481 000 pounds. We can assume that the owner of both papers was one person, but to congratulate him, unfortunately, there is nothing.

Fig. 6.

According to the schedule Index ARTIMX ( Fig. 6 ), the price of the product Konchalovsky has still not recovered to pre-crisis values, so now buy his work should be carefully studied the results of recent sales.

As part of the market left work Alexander Yakovlev «Opera in Beijing" (for 825 000 pounds), "Nude » (825,000 pounds)," Nude Dancers » Vladimir Baranoff-Rossine (481,000 pounds)," Guitarist "Konstantin Korovin (517 thousand pounds).

Suddenly, two remained unsold, "Venice" of the "Venice» (estimate: 400 - 600 thousand pounds), and "Ponte di Rialto. Venice "Konchalovsky, which was established in 1924 and is a perfect example of the artist at that time. It is interesting that in this work, a proposal was made in 580 thousand pounds, only 20 thousand less than the lower estimate, but it somehow was not enough to sell. In general, if the reserves at Sotheby's were not so high, lots sold would be higher.

total of evening auctions of the 55 lots did not sell 19, totaling 14.1 million pounds . Representatives of Sotheby's result is not pleased.

past the next day, day trading and auction of arts and crafts brought to 3.3 and 3.8 million pounds, respectively. Sensation was not. Note the high prices, "An abstract portrait» Paul Chelishchev (121,000 pounds), attributed to Charles Bryullov picture" of Pope Pius IX Returning to Rome in 1850 '(241 000 in the evaluation of 50-70 thousand pounds), "Still Life" Manevich (73 000 pounds), "Portrait of a Moroccan woman," Zinaida Serebryakova (82,000 pounds). In general, most of the work left within the estimate and any new trends could not be detected. The works of the sixties for the most part left the former owners, a "Composition with seven elements» Vladimir Veisberg moved to new 79.2 hands for thousands of pounds. Toward the close of trading there was a fun sale: work first appeared on the western auctions was sold for 63 000 estimeyte 10 -15 000 pounds. As they say, no comment.

In the segment of arts and crafts traditionally enjoyed close scrutiny Faberge items.

Bonhams

3,5 million pounds collected at the London auction auction house Bonhams, can be considered a success. With each auction, the total amount of sales increases, and at Bonhams appears more and more opportunities to get a good "piece of cake" in Russian art market. In the painting, which brought the auction house 50 percent of income, there are several interesting deals - for example, selling paintings Malyavina «Country Dance" 180 thousand pounds.

As can be seen from schedule index ARTIMX ( Fig. 7 ), the product Malyavina are now at the peak of customer demand, and if the trend continues, the new owner can make good money on a big, typical of the artist's work.
