born in the family of artist-lithographer A. Kasatkin and serf peasant. The first artistic skills obtained at home under the guidance of his father. In 1873 entered MUZhViZ, studied at Perov, IM Pryanishnikova, AK Savrasov. In 1878, for "Study the old woman" and in 1882 for drawing from nature small awarded silver medals. In 1883, for the painting "The beggars on the church square" was awarded a large silver medal and was promoted to the class artist.

From 1878 he taught at the school when printing Society for the Propagation of useful books in 1884-1894 - at the Art School at the printing of the Association "Sytin and K °». From 1894 until the revolution of 1917 collaborated with the publishing IDSytin and as an artist.

In 1893 he was awarded the title of Academician. In 1894-1918 he taught at MUZhViZ.

Since 1890 regularly exhibited his works at exhibitions of the Moscow Society of Art Lovers (until 1910, with interruptions) and TPHV, in 1891 became a member of the Association (until 1922). Kasatkin - one of the leading Russian artists of the realistic art of the second half of XIX - the first third of the twentieth century. The most significant period of his artistic activities associated with TPHV.
