Ivan Vladimirov studied in the Drawing School in Wilno, under the guidance of I. P. Trutnev. Vladimirov finished St. Petersburg Military School in 1895, but he had to leave military service due to his illness. In 1891–1893 Vladimirov studied in the Imperial Academy of Arts (IAKh), in the class of battle-scene painting under the guidance of B. P. Villevalde, F. A. Roubaud, and A. D. Kivshenko. He was awarded for his student works a small and two big silver medals in 1891, and small silver one in 1892. In 1893 Vladimirov was conferred title of class artist of the 2nd degree for the painting Dressing Station during the Caucasian War, in 1897 — title of class artist of the 1st degree for the painting Defeat of Adygeis on the Malka River. When he was a student, Vladimirov often made trips to the Crimea and to the Caucasus, to the auls in the mountains, where he executed a lot of sketches and studies. In 1897 he attended the studio of Édouard Detaille in Paris.
The artist lived in St. Petersburg (Petrograd — Leningrad). He painted battle scenes, genre scenes and landscapes. He served as an art correspondent on the fronts of the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905), Balkan Wars (1912–1913), and the First World War (1914–1917).
Vladimirov took part in the Revolution movement. In 1917-1918 he worked in Petrograd police. He performed several sketches of V. I. Lenin from nature. Vladimirov painted on the subjects of the Revolution history of the country: Barricades at Presnya. 1905, Down with Eagle!, Arrest of the Tsarist Generals, V. I. Lenin at the Meeting, Flight of Bourgeoisie from Novorossiysk, Liquidation of Vrangel's Forces.
Vladimirov took part in the exhibitions of the A. I. Kuindzhi Society of Artists (1917, 1918, 1927, 1930), the Spring exhibitions in the halls of the Academy of Arts (1918), the exhibitions of the Society of Travelling Art Exhibitions (TPKhV; 1918), the Society of Russian Watercolorists (ORA; 1918), the Association of Artists (1922, 1923), the First State Independent Art Exhibition (1919), the Exhibition of works by Petrograd artists of all art movements (1923), the Jubilee Exhibition of Fine Arts (1927), the exhibition Socialist Construction in visual arts (1931) and many others. In 1924–1929 he was a member and exhibitor of the Association of the artists of Revolutionary Russia (AKhRR).
During the Great Patriotic War, Vladimirov created agitation posters. In 1946 he was conferred title of the Honoured Art Worker of RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic); he was awarded medals and the Order of the Red Banner of Labour.
Works by Ivan Vladimirov are in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and a lot of regional museums.
