Born into a peasant family. He graduated from the Kiev railway school. In 1895, a volunteer enlisted. He served in the Caucasus. In 1897-1899 he studied at the Tiflis infantry cadet school. At the same time attended a local art school. In 1904 moved to St. Petersburg in the General Directorate of military establishments. In the same year at the rank of lieutenant resigned to devote himself to painting. Since 1905 as an auditor trained in IAH and AA Kiselev, D. Kardovsky, N. Dubovsky. In 1906 went to Munich, where a short time was engaged in private schools F. Stuck, Aschbe and O. Zayentsa. On the advice of AIKuindzhi made a trip to Paris and London. In 1908-1914 he traveled in France, Italy, Spain, Germany and Turkey. He worked in the Crimea and the Caucasus. In 1912 received the title of the artist's painting "On the seashore, created in Spain.

In the 1900's - 1910-x wrote mostly landscapes. The exhibit at the exhibitions "Triangle-Wreath-Stephanos" in St. Petersburg (1910), the Youth Union in Riga (1910) and St. Petersburg (1912-1913), 2-m VA Izdebsky Salon in St. Petersburg, the exhibition " Donkey's Tail "in Moscow (1912)," World of Art in Petrograd (1915).

During the First World War served as an artist-correspondent for the magazine "The Sun of Russia on the Caucasian front. Collaborated in the magazines "tops", "Niva" and others. In 1916, in Tsarskoe Selo, was an exhibition of his wartime sketches.

In 1918 participated in a festive decoration of Petrograd in the 1 st anniversary of the October Revolution. In 1919 received the prize in "The Great Russian Revolution" for now "Sphinx". In 1920, created the costumes and scenery for the production of the tragedy of Pushkin's "Boris Godunov" in Theater and dramatic workshop of the Red Army (not implemented). In 1921 he emigrated to Finland, in 1929 he settled in Copenhagen. He worked primarily as a portraitist. In the 1920 - 1930 held solo exhibitions in Copenhagen, Helsinki, Stockholm and Berlin. In 1929 took part in the exhibition of Russian art in Copenhagen.

At the beginning of his artistic activities (1900-s - early 1910-s) was under the influence of Impressionism and creativity miriskusnikov, with their usual stylization and the desire for decoration. Creativity mid - late 1910-s stated interest in the avant-garde experiments.
