son of Baron K. E. von Liphart, collector, connoisseur of old masters. General education in the Dorpat school and at school in Italy, where he was in 1863-1873. Painting began to study independently under the guidance of B. Kruger, E. Shteklera and P. Cornelius. He studied in Florence at the F. Lenbach (since 1865), which on behalf of the Munich art gallery in Italy copied the work of Veronese, Tintoretto, Van Dyck, Giorgione, in Spain - the work of Velazquez and Murillo. Studied decorative painting in Venice, under the direction of G. Jacquet (1869-1873). He studied art history under the guidance of his father and critic A. Venturi, and W. Bode. From 1873 he studied in Paris at the Academy Julien R. y J. Lefebvre, G. Jacquet and G. Boulanger.

In 1870, 80 became known in Paris as a draftsman, portraitist, illustrator and author of the decorative paintings of palace interiors. Participated in the activities of the Company's mutual SUPPORT charity and Russian artists in Paris.

In 1886 he moved to St. Petersburg. Many worked under orders of the imperial family and court. Executed portraits, landscapes, paintings of biblical and mythological themes, two panels, painted walls and ceilings of palaces, sketches menu gala dinners, curtains for theaters, way for churches. Many worked in watercolor technique, studied etching. In 1893, for "excellent knowledge of painting" was awarded the title of academician. Member of the IAH (since 1902). Member of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts.

Member of the Society of Russian and exponential watercolourists (1887-1917). Held a solo exhibition in St. Petersburg (1894).

taught decorative painting and drawing in the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts (1886-1896) and decorative painting in Kseniinskom Institute of noble maidens (with 1887). Honorary guardian of professional courses Kseniinskogo Institute (since 1903).

He has lectured on the history of Italian and Spanish painting at the Institute for Art History (Zubovskiy Institute, since 1912). Curator (from 1906), Senior Curator (Head) art galleries of the Hermitage (1909-1918), curator of the Hermitage art gallery (1918-1929). Author of numerous works on art history and problems of attribution of paintings by old masters. Was advisor to the Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna, GS and PS Stroganov acquire for their collections of works of Italian art.

Liphart works are in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Hermitage Museum, and others.
