born in the family customs officials, the younger brother of Leonid The middle - Yalta doctor, a friend of Anton Chekhov, Mikhail Nesterov, A. M. Gorky was a relative of Stanislavsky.

Original art education in the early 1880's under the leadership of AA Kiselev. In 1889 he enrolled at the Stroganov Artistic and Industrial College. In the summer he took private lessons with VK Stemberg, worked on sketches with SS Goloushev's (Sergei verb). Around 1890 he entered the natural faculty of Moscow University and later was assistant professor, Department of Geology. After graduation, on the advice of Vasnetsov worked in a private studio Korovin (until 1899), where friends with PV Kuznetsov, AN D . Milioti, NA Tarkhov, Mamontov. From 1898, he participated in exhibitions of the Moscow Society of Art Lovers.

In 1897 traveled to Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France. In 1899-1901 he lived in Paris, studied at the Academy Julien in R. Laurent and J.-P. J.-J. Benjamin-Constant, and also in the School of F. Kolarossii at Girardot. Visited Normandy, Algeria, Savoy, Biskra, Tunis and Nice. In 1901-1902 he lived in Yalta, in 1902 - in Moscow. Since 1904 has exhibited his works at exhibitions of the Moscow Association of Artists. Collaborated in the journal "Old Years" from 1906 was a member of the art department of the magazine "Golden Fleece", which published his pictures and articles, including essays on VE Borisov-Musatov and MV Nesterov. In 1907 he co-founded association "Free aesthetics. In 1906-1907 participated in exhibitions of the Society of Leonardo da Vinci, in 1907 - in the expositions of the Union of Russian Artists (became a member of the Union in 1910) and the New Society of Artists. In The middle of the 1906-1907 work displayed at the exhibitions of Russian art in Paris and Berlin, organized by Sergei Diaghilev, in 1911 - at the International Exhibition in Rome.

After the 1917 revolution was a member of the Commission for the Protection of works of art and antiquities at the Moscow Soviet, was engaged in accounting and protection of collections of individuals in and around Moscow. In 1918 became a member of the management Rumyantsev Museum. In 1925-1927 worked with the State Academy of Artistic Sciences. In The middle of the 1924-1925 work exhibited at the Russian Art in New York. In 1927 he became one of the founders of the Association of realist artists.

In 1928 he emigrated, settling in Paris. A member of the Assemblies of Russian artists in the Paris workshop of Ivan Bilibin. Collaborated in the newspaper "Revival". In 1934, tragically died under the wheels of the train.
