Exhibition Fyodor Stepanovich Rokotov (1735/1736–1808) in the Tretyakov gallery — 40 reference works of the most mysterious artist of the second half of the eighteenth century. One of the main portraitists of his era, he worked for the St. Petersburg and Moscow aristocracy. The legacy of the artist first presented in the context of the world of estate culture.
This is only the third monographic exhibition Rokotov. It summarizes research for the last 50 years and presents the audience a new perspective on the legacy of the artist. For the first time his work was presented in 1923-м year in the Tretyakov gallery on the initiative I. Grabar (1925-м the exhibition was repeated at the State Russian Museum). A small exhibition included many things that needed serious attribution. A big retrospective exhibition of the master took place in the state Tretyakov gallery in 1960-м year. In addition to the work, no doubt painted by Rokotov, she represented a lot of artists of his circle. This exhibition showcases the best selected works of the author. During the preparation of the exhibition have been re-attributed about 20 paintings. A special section of the exhibition introduces the research results of the 5 portraits from the collection of the Tretyakov gallery, previously attributed to Rokotov: images A. I. Kurakina, V. N. Galitzine, unknown in dark-красном dress unknown on the provincial uniform of the unknown and General.
the Works of Rokotov is presented in three sections. The first reflects the time of formation of the painter — during his time in St. Petersburg. As shown by the results of recent studies, two ceremonial portrait of Catherine II this time were created not by the artist himself, and the disciples of his workshop. As Rokotov was the author of composite solutions of these images, he put his signature on them. In the next section of the exhibition presents the Moscow period. This is the heyday of creativity Rokotov, associated with the work on the portraits of many noble families. The third section is dedicated to the works of the painter, executed for the interiors of "family nests" — manor palaces. Thanks to the work of researchers managed to synthesize the 26 estates where works of Rokotov. Several pieces of furniture and works of sculpture from these farms and engravings with views the exhibition.
roars went beyond the usual typology of the portrait of the XVIII century. In the open images of the spiritual qualities of the model. They read the poetics of intimacy and the "secular tone of a whisper": the lack of gestures, vivid details and distinctive look of the characters, aimed at the viewer. Music, a contemporary artist, sounds in the exhibition halls. Presented in the exposition of the book tell about the literary tastes of the era. Among them we can find and the first Masonic magazine "Morning light" N. I. Novikova, a subscriber who was and he roars. In General, the exposition will provide a fairly complete picture of the age of Enlightenment in Russia.
the exhibition reveals the almost detective story of the eighteenth century, interesting for the modern viewer, even a little familiar with this era. So, very little is known about the identity and life of the Rokotov. More than 200 years of existence many of the portraits had lost the names of their models. The entire XIX century, portraits of famous noblemen (among whom members of the genus Yusupov, Shuvalov, Golitsyn) were kept in the families of the heirs, and in 1905 the public was able to see them on the Tauric exhibition, organized by S. P. Dyagilev. Techno-технологические methods of examination decided for the remaining previous researchers varied the riddle of the preservation works. Examination showed that the threshold 1760-70-х, roars every decade experimented with the amount and composition of binder in paints.
