Bubnova name is well known to experts painting of the twentieth century. She was an artist, a teacher and a man of great inner scale. Lived a truly amazing life, one might say, more than one, but three. Researchers have identified three major periods in the works Bubnov, "avant-garde youth" (1912-1922), "Japanese maturity" (1922-1958) and "Sukhumi wisdom» (1958-1979).
Barbara D. Bubnov was born in St. Petersburg in 1886. From 1907 to 1914 she studied at the Higher Art School of the Imperial Academy of Arts F. Rubo and N. Dubovsky, from 1913 to 1915 - at the Archaeological Institute.
Bubnov in 1913 joined the Union of Youth. Together with K. Malevich , Vladimir V. Tatlin , M. Larionov , N. Goncharova , Olga O. Rozanov has been involved in the avant-garde art exhibitions. Bubnov translated into Russian famous "Manifesto of Futurism" FT Marinetti. Studied art at the same time the people of different countries. Together with her husband, artist and art critic Waldemar Matvejs (V. Mathew, 1878-1914) made trip to Europe, where she met with the ethnographic museum collections.
After moving to Moscow in 1917 to work at the Institute of Artistic Culture (INKhuK) with B. Kandinsky , A. Rodchenko and the State Historical Museum in the department of manuscripts and old printed books.
Bubnov in 1922 went with his mother from Soviet Russia to Japan, where she lived after her marriage her sister - AD Bubnov-It. The artist studied at the Tokyo College of Art and crafts, where she studied the technique of lithography. Taught Russian literature at Waseda University and the Institute of Foreign Languages in Tokyo, Hokkaido University.
Japan Bubnov seriously and enthusiastically engaged in lithography and become the most famous lithographer country. It was published several editions of Russian classics (Pushkin, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy), translated into Japanese and illustrated Bubnov. For contribution to the development of cultural relations between Japan and the Soviet Union, she was awarded the Order of the Precious Crown IV degree (1982) - the highest honor awarded to foreigners.
Bubnov returned home in 1958. In the summer of that year, settled in Sukhumi, Abkhazia, his older sister MD Bubnov, where she lived until returning to Leningrad in 1979. At this time she first appeared pupil-painters, and the result of its educational activities has been the emergence of an entire galaxy of contemporary artists' Sukhumi school ».
When the artist's life in the Soviet Union held 20 solo exhibitions of her work . In 1959, she became a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR, in 1966 she was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Georgia.
last years Bubnov held in Leningrad, where she died in 1983. She was buried in Sukhumi.

The exhibition at the fortress presents more than 30 works Bubnova Collection of KI Barashkova (collection is stored in the gallery "Shazina" on trust). It's landscapes, portraits, self-portraits, scenes from everyday life. Here you can see the black-and-white lithographs and linocuts Japanese period.
