Two Russian top lot at Christie's evening auction of Impressionist and Modern place from May 8 same private European collection. Marc Chagall painting "Three acrobat" was written in 1926. It is known that the work of the same name Chagall executed in his first Paris period (1911 - mid 1914), ie more than ten years earlier, but her whereabouts are now unknown - unfortunately, many of Chagall this first Paris period were lost. When he left Russia in the summer of 1914, the artist has left more than 40 works by the Berlin gallery owner "Storm" Gervart Walden for the exhibition. Most likely, among them was the first version of the "Three acrobats." Then came the war, Chagall and his wife could not leave Russia until 1922. When he got back to Berlin, his paintings had already been sold by the German collectors. The artist first tried unsuccessfully to bring them to court, and then began to recover by the memory of that period. So there were "Three acrobat" in 1926. Perhaps under the influence of this particular work Ambroise Vollard in 1927, ordered a series of gouaches by Chagall circus theme.
