Paul Chelischev (1898-1957) grew up in a family Kaluga landowner and studied painting with private teachers. Chelischev drawing since early childhood, during the period from 1916 to 1918 attended art classes at the Moscow University. In 1918, fleeing the revolution, Chelischev moved to Kiev, where he took lessons from Alexandra Exter and until 1920 he studied at the Academy of Arts. In 1920 he went to Constantinople, short-lived in Sofia, worked on a number of ballets and theatrical productions, and then in 1921 moved to Berlin, which began to write still lifes and portraits.

Since 1923 Chelischev lived and worked in Paris, where his work has undergone fundamental changes. From 1919 to 1942 Chelischev has acquired a reputation as one of the most daring and innovative theater artists of his time. His work is mainly known for innovative use of unusual materials and dramatic lighting solutions. Among the most famous productions, which worked on the design Chelischev, it should be noted penultimate Diaghilev ballet troupe - «Oda» Nicholas Nabokov staged by Leonid Myasina (1928, Paris), the ballet «wanderer» to music by Schubert at the Theater of the Champs Elysees (1933, Paris) Paul Hindemith ballet «Dostoslavneyshee vision», staged by Leonid Myasina (1938, London) and play on the play by Jean Giraudoux «Undina» (1939, Paris). Chelischev became a U.S. citizen in 1952, and later because of deteriorating health he moved to Italy.

On the canvas that is exposed at Christie's auction in April, shows Edalzhi Dinsho (1916-1970). Dinsho, son of the founder and owner of leading Indian companies for the production of cement, was born in Mumbai, and died in New York, which moved along with her sister the day before the Second World War.
