Art education in MUZhViZ, where he studied from 1884 to 1889 by Vladimir Makovsky, ES Sorokin, VD Polenov , IM Pryanishnikova. In 1889 he studied with Ivan Aivazovsky in Feodosia.

in 1904-1907 participated in exhibitions TPHV and the Moscow Association of Artists. Has exhibited his works at international exhibitions in Rome, Vienna and Munich. Many traveled, visited Italy, Switzerland, Japan, India, Africa, South America. In 1920 he emigrated to the United States.

At home work Kalmykova almost unknown and forgotten. However, the art critic and art historian Alexander Benois counted him among the most gifted and talented followers I. Levitan.

Kalmykova works are in several museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum, Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.
