In 1913-1917 headed the school of painting on enamel in Rostov and Torzhok, a workshop for the production of artistic furniture in Kologrivov province of Tula.

After the revolution, participated in the agitation design of streets and squares of Petrograd to the first anniversary of the October Revolution. He was a member of the artistic board of the Visual Arts Department Narcompros.

In 1918-1923 and 1925-1927 was the artistic director of the State Porcelain Factory in St. Petersburg (then Leningrad). In 1923-1925 headed the artistic part Novgubfarfora (ex-factory Kuznetsov in the Novgorod province). Realized on samples propaganda porcelain. Sergei Chekhonin is best known as a painter on porcelain, where he created his own style, and especially the style and school of so-called propaganda porcelain early 1920. Thanks Chekhonin in Russian porcelain of the first two decades of the twentieth century was dominated by orientation to the style of "World of Art" (in essence, the style of Art Nouveau).
