From the large family of the employee. Studied at the gymnasium in Kutaisi, from 1906 — 5-й classical gymnasium in Moscow (not completed). Became friendly with revolutionary-minded students, in 1908 he joined the RSDLP, was performed outreach jobs; in 1908-1909 was arrested three times (including in the case of underground press of the RSDLP).

Original art education was under the guidance of С. П. Краснухи in Kutaisi. Attended preparatory classes at the Stroganov Central art-промышленного school (1909), was engaged in private studios С. Ю. Жуковского and П. И. Келина in Moscow. Studied in MUZHVZ (1911-1914, did not graduate).

the school became friendly with Д. Д. Бурлюком and cubofuturists; participated in the writing of the Manifesto "a slap in the face of public taste" (1912).

he Lived in Moscow (1906-1914, 1919). In 1915-1917 he was in military service in automotive training school in Petrograd. In the mid 1910-х closer to Л. Ю. and О. М. Брик; he lived in the Petrograd apartment of the Brick.

Participated in the preparation of publications futurist "slap in the face of public taste" (1912), "Milk of mares", "Dead moon" (both — 1913), "Roaring Parnassus" (1914) and others. Together with Д. Д. Бурлюком, В. В. Каменским participated in the "futurist tour" (collective rhetoric with readings of poems). In those same years he collaborated in the magazine "New Satyricon" (1915); participated in the activities of the Association "Free aesthetics".

published poetry collections: "I" (1913), "Simple as mooing" (1916), "the Revolution. Poetronica" (1917). Wrote and published the poem: "a Cloud in trousers", "Flute-позвоночник" (both — 1914-1915), "War and peace" (1915), "Man" (1916-1917), "150 000 000" (1919-1920), "Love" (1922), "About this" (1923), "Vladimir Ilich Lenin" (1924), "all right!" (1927).

After the October revolution participated in the work of the College of fine ARTS Narcompros. Together with Д. Д. Бурлюком and В. В. Каменским produced "the Newspaper of the futurists" (1918, published one room), newspaper "Art commune". The correspondent of the newspaper "Izvestia" (1922-1926), a permanent employee of "Komsomolskaya Pravda" (1926-1929). Published in the magazine "New world", "Young guard", "Ogonyok", "Crocodile", "Krasnaya Niva", "October".

(1920, never built), "the Jews in the land" А. М. Роома (1927), "Three" А. Соловьева (1927), "Oktyabrugol and Decabromo" А. Смирнова and А. Искандера (1928).

In 1922-1924 travelled around Latvia, France, Germany, visited the workshops П. Пикассо, Р. Делоне. In 1925 he traveled to Spain and America (USA, Cuba, Mexico). In 1927 he visited Berlin and Paris. Written essays: "How does a democratic Republic?" (1922), "Paris (conversations with the Eiffel tower)" (1923), "My discovery of America" (1925), the cycle of poems "Paris" (1925). Worked on a series of "Poems about America" (1925-1926). In 1925-1928 traveled around Soviet Union with concerts and lectures.

Actively participated in the artistic life. Executed landscapes, portraits, cartoon sketches, sketches of costumes and scenery for their own plays (in particular, "Mystery Bouffe").

In November 1912 exhibited at the exhibition of the society "Union of youth"; participated in the debates of the Association "Jack of diamonds". In August — October 1914 написал more than 30 текстов to the posters, prints and postcards produced by the publishing house "Moscow print". Author theoretical articles: "Art today", "Russia. Art. We" (all — 1914), "Agitation and advertising" (1923) and others.

Worked in poster art and advertising. One of the organizers, leading artists and poets "Window satire Growth" (1919-1921). In 1920-х together with А. М. Родченко engaged in industrial graphics — developed the design of advertising and packing for the trust "Mosselprom", "Resinates", HUM. Advertising representative trust "Mosselprom", the author of many advertising slogans (slogans).

One of the founders of the educational organization "Compute (the Communists — futurists"; 1921). Member of-учредитель literary-художественных associations LEF (1922-1928), REF (1929-1930); editor of the journals "LEF" (1923-1925) and "New LEF" (1927-1928). Member of RAPP (Russian Association of proletarian writers; 1930).

Participated in 1-й State free exhibition of works of art in Petrograd (1919), International exhibition art-декоративных arts in Paris (1925; silver medal), the exhibition "Window satire Growth" (1929) in Moscow.

In 1929 conceived the exhibition "20 лет work", which is still in the preparatory stage met resistance Paliskunta. As a result open 1 февраля 1930 the exhibition was not a success, collected a few spectators and received almost no responses in the press.

14 апреля 1930 at No. 3 (apartment No. 12) on Lubyanka passage in Moscow has committed suicide; 15-17 апреля was organized parting with Mayakovsky in the hall of the writers ' Club; 17 апреля held a mourning rally and funeral. He was buried at Novodevichy cemetery in Moscow.
