Studied in MUZHVZ (1894-1904) in AE Arkhipov, A. M. Korin, VA Serov. Lived in Moscow, he worked primarily as a portraitist, he wrote as landscapes, genre paintings. Passed through passion Impressionism, has been influenced by Serov, was close to the masters association Union of Russian Artists.

member and exhibitor of Moscow Society of Art Lovers, TPHV (1906-1923, with interruptions, a member since 1911).

After the October Revolution artist's work has not changed significantly. In 1920-40's made a series of portraits of public figures (NIPodvoisky, 1923; VA Antonov-Ovseyenko, 1923; Lunacharskii, 1920 -- e) and intellectuals (SP Leontovich, 1930; SY Lemeshev, AA Yablochkin, 1939; AP Ktorov, 1940).

In the Soviet years participated in the 1 st public exhibition of art and science in Kazan (1920), an art exhibition "Red Army" (1923), Society of Artists exhibition of paintings of Moscow school (1925), shows association of artists realists (1927, 1928), AChRs (1929), the first traveling exhibition of paintings and drawings (1929), reporting the exhibition of works by artists, loaned to the areas of industrial and collective farms (1931) in Moscow, art and industrial exhibition in Cologne (1929) and others.

taught in their own studio in Moscow (1903-1917), the state of free art workshops - Higher Art (1918-1922), professor; among his students - BV Johanson, AD and PD Corinne, Vladimir Mayakovsky, V. Karev, D. C. Moore and others.

Kälin works are in several museum collections, among them - Rostov Regional Museum of Fine Arts, Perm Art Gallery.
