from a family doctor. Since 1888 he lived in Kiev. The first artistic skills acquired in the Kyiv Drawing School (since 1888) by H. Platonov. Studied in MUZHVZ (1897-1902) in NA Kasatkin, A. Arkhipov, A. M. Korin, in the workshop by Valentin Serov and K. Korovin. In 1901, he was awarded two small silver medals and received the title neklassnogo (free), painter. In 1903, for the painting "Mother" was awarded the title of the class artist. After MUZHVZ entered the Higher Art School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture at IAH; in 1904, was enrolled in Repin's studio, but the study did not, and returned to Moscow, where he continued his studies at the workshop Serov.
