born in the family of the Austrian merchant. In 1889 he received Russian citizenship. In 1885-1891 he studied at the IAH in St. Petersburg in the class of landscape painting in MK Klodt. For student work repeatedly noted medals: in 1886 - a small bonus medal in 1887 - a small silver medal in 1888 - two large silver medals, in 1890 - a small gold medal.
