born in a family of merchants. Initial artistic skills obtained in the Astrakhan school, but the course is not finished. Some time was engaged in trade. In 1851 entered MUZhViZ, worked under the guidance of KI Rabusa and AK Savrasov. In 1857, for submitting to the Board of IAH landscape was promoted neklassnogo (free), painter.

In 1861 became a member and exhibitor of the Moscow Society of Lovers of Fine Arts. In 1862 the means of a member of the Society NM Asalina went abroad. Until 1864 he lived in Düsseldorf and Munich.
