Of noble family, the son of a lawyer. He spent his childhood in the village Busheny and Odessa (1877). General education in the real school of St. Peter and Paul Church in Odessa. Studied at Odessa drawing school (1883-1889) by K. Kostandi. In 1889, on the recommendation of the Repin joined the IAH, but in 1890 left his studies and returned to Odessa.

Published a book of stories "on the shore of the Sea (Moscow, 1918)" Moon "(Odessa, 1919).
After the October Revolution took part in the reorganization of the Odessa Art School and the establishment of the Odessa Union of Plastic Arts. Since 1918 - Member of the City Council of the intellectuals. A cycle of paintings "demonstration" (1917). Participated in the 1-st state free exhibition of works of art (1919) in Petrograd.
In early 1920, left Russia in the flow of white emigration. In 1920-1923 traveled to cities in Eastern Europe, held exhibitions in Sofia (1920), Vidin (1921), Zagreb (1922, 1923), Bucharest and Belgrade (both - 1923). In early 1924 he settled in Paris. Wrote Symbolic romantic landscapes, still lifes (1920), in 1930 returned to the realistic manner.
exhibited work in the salons of the National Society of Fine Arts (1925-1928), Independent (1925-1943, with interruptions), the Tuileries (1930-1939, with interruptions), Autumn (1936, 1938). Held solo exhibitions in galleries in Paris "Petit J.", "Charpentier" (both - 1924), Bernheim (1929), "Zak" (1934). Works Nilus also exhibited at exhibitions of the Art Society to them. KK Kostandi in Odessa (1925-1926).
in 1975 at the Salon d'Automne in Paris held a retrospective exhibition of the artist.
Creativity Nilus represented in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Literary Museum, Odessa Art Museum, the Luxembourg Museum and others.
