From the family of a tailor. He studied at the Moscow school of painting (1870-1890) В. Е. Маковского, И. М. Прянишникова. In 1887 and 1888 for the sketches and drawings were awarded small silver medals; in 1890 for his painting "Outside the calculation" — a large silver medal.

he Lived in Moscow; in 1890-х visited Paris. In the first half of 1890-х together with В. Е. Маковским participated in the painting of Christ the Savior Cathedral in Borki, Kharkov province. He worked primarily as a genre painter. Author of painting works: "mining" (1883), "Rookie" (1893), "Girlfriends" (1896), "Homeless" (1897), "the Faithful" (1900), "cornflowers" (1902), "the Farmer at the plow", "In the garden" (both — 1906), "card", "campfire" (1927). Executed a number of portraits, landscapes and paintings on historical themes; portrait of the artist В. И. Познеева (1903), "Landscape with huts" (1912), "After the student strikes", "Driven into exile", "Lenin and the worker" (all — 1920-е).

From 1883 the participant of exhibitions (Students MUZHVZ). A member and Exhibitor of the Moscow society of art lovers (1893-1902; the member from 1894), TPHV (1891-1923, with breaks; member since 1895), an Association of artists-реалистов (1927, 1928; member since 1929). Works were exhibited in the art Department of the all-Russia industrial and agricultural exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod (1896), "the Peasant in Russian art" in Moscow (1924).

Work is represented in many Museum collections, among them — of the State Tretyakov gallery, State Russian Museum, Vologda regional picture gallery, Penza regional picture gallery of. К. А. Савицкого and others.
