From October 2019 through February 2020 in the New Tretyakov gallery will be recreated the exposition of Russia's first Museum of modern art — of the Museum of painterly culture, which existed from 1919 to 1929
In 2019, the Tretyakov gallery celebrates 100-летний anniversary of a unique project of Soviet Russia, covering the country's entire network of museums of a new type, — museums of painterly culture. The Symposium was attended by such famous artists as Vassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, David Shterenberg, Vladimir Tatlin, Alexander Drevin.
One of the world's first public museums of modern art, the only official Museum of the avant-garde — Moscow Museum of painterly culture (MZHK) —, there were only 10 years (1919-1929). When SWC had already finished his story, the famous Museum of modern art (MOMA) in new-Йорке just opened. Over the years, YHC gathered the largest collection of modern paintings, drawings and sculpture, mainly representatives of the Russian avant-garde. Only through the funds of the Moscow Museum took about 2000 works.
Unique was not only the direction but also the concept of the new Museum. He had to function both as a site of representation of the new art, like science-исследовательская laboratory, which developed the methods and technology of contemporary art.
in 1924, SWC formally became a branch of the Tretyakov gallery. After his sudden liquidation in 1929 the Gallery was handed over more than 700 works, which was the first big arrival at the Museum of modern art. Work for a short time was included in the exhibition of the newest currents of the Tretyakov gallery, but in the mid-1930-х picture of the "age of formalism" was expelled from Museum practice. For a long time the history of the Museum of painterly culture was forgotten.
works from the collection of the Moscow Museum of painterly culture, part of his exposition, and later in official List no. I (that is the best Museum exhibits), today adorn not only the permanent exhibition of the Tretyakov gallery on the Crimean Shaft, but all the leading international exhibition Russian avant-garde. It's "Black suprematic square" (1915) by Kazimir Malevich, "Improvisation 7" (1910) by Wassily Kandinsky, "Violin" (1915) Lyubov Popova, "Resting soldier" (1911), Mikhail Larionov and others.
this exhibition for the first time will present a unique reconstruction of an exposition of the Museum of painterly culture, reconstructed from archival documents. In addition to works from the Tretyakov gallery, it will also include works that are today in the collections of regional and even foreign museums (including the Tate Modern in London and Museum Ludwig in Cologne). The project involves 18 Russian and 5 foreign collections. The exhibition includes about 250 paintings, graphic and sculptural works, as well as analytical materials SWC, a whole layer of rare archival documents, books and photographs.
Curator: Lyubov Pchelkina Rinaldone, senior researcher of the Department of painting of the first half of XX century, State Tretyakov gallery.
