The first large-scale exhibition of Soutine in Russia. Works from the collections of French museums and Russian private collections. Opening October 24

24 October 2017 at the State Museum of fine arts named after A. S. Pushkin will open the first in Russia exhibition devoted to the work of the brightest representative of the school of Paris, French artist of Russian origin Chaim Soutine (1893-1943) — master who has created his own unique style, inspired by classical art masters of XV–XVIII centuries, and gave direction to the creative pursuits of many artists of later generations.

Chaim Soutine was born in the Jewish town of Smilavichy near Minsk, he studied in Vilna and in 1913 he settled in Paris, where he first settled in the commune of artists "Beehive", and then met and became friends with Amedeo Modigliani, who took an active part in the life of his friend. The year 1923 was a turning point in the life of a Soutine. American collector albert Barnes first saw the paintings of the painter. Under strong impression of "Portrait of the pastry chef" Barnes exclaimed: "This artist I was looking for all my life!" The gallery owner Leo Zborowski, who worked with Soutine, collector buys 52. In the same year they first shown at an exhibition in Paris and then at the Academy of fine arts of Pennsylvania. Thanks to Barnes to come cutino recognition and material well-being. Since the mid 1920-х the artist's works are regularly exhibited by the leading galleries in France, USA, England. His paintings become an integral part of the largest European and American private collections, and then the leading museums in the world. The artist's life was short: suffering from a long and severe illness, he died at the age of fifty. The funeral was attended by only the last companion of Soutine, Max Jacob and Pablo Picasso.

In 1950, the Museum of modern art of the city of new-Йорка held the first retrospective exhibition of the artist, in 1952 his paintings were included in the main exposition of the XXVI Venice Biennale of contemporary art. Today in the world more than fifty exhibitions on Haim soutenu.

Forthcoming exhibition will be the first in Russia, as fully representing the work of this artist. Soutine's paintings reflect the spirit of French painting of the XVII century, and its rich palette and compositional solutions originated in the works of artists of the Enlightenment. In the portraits painted Soutine was influenced by artists Jean Fouquet, Jacques-Луи David, still lifes testify to the obvious admiration for the paintings of Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn and Jean-Батиста Simeon Chardin, and many landscapes — is the fruit of reflection of the artist's paintings by Nicolas Poussin, Jean-Батиста Dream and Camille Corot.

Only the exhibition will feature 64 works: paintings by the Soutine, the work of the old masters, had an influence on him, as well as works by contemporary artists inspired by his paintings.

the Russian audience will see the masterpieces of classical, modernist and contemporary art from major French museums: the Musee d'orsay, the National Museum of modern art / Center of industrial design — Centre Pompidou, Museum of modern art city of Paris, the Louvre, the Museum of Picardy. The exhibition will also present works from Switzerland — early abstraction by Mark Rothko and the painting of Francis bacon 1969 (Fondation Beyeler); from England — classic British modern art Frank Auerbach (the Tate Gallery), as well as more than 20 works of the most solid Russian private collections, including the textbook: "beef bull", "Siesta", "Woman who walks into the water", "Turkey against a brick wall."

the Exhibition will be held in the halls of the Main building of the Pushkin Museum. A. S. Pushkin and consist of three sections: "Portraits", "Landscapes" and "still life". Every part will showcase the work of Soutine, paintings of old masters and classics of modern art.
