"Dmitry Zhilinsky. Inner circle" in the Tretyakov gallery
On the Crimean Val opens exhibition of Dmitri Dmitrievich Zhilinsky (1927-2015), covering the artist's early works from the 1950s-х to works 2000-х

Zhilinsky worked in the portrait genre. Seeking to capture the appearance of prominent personalities of his era, with whom he was friends or was directly familiar, the artist has given the portrait features of the characters, not only the first but also the second and third plans. In preparation for the exhibition were the names of the people depicted in the paintings, allowing-новому to interpret some of the work. When artists of his generation worked out the concise language of the "severe style", drawing on traditions of Soviet art of the 1920s-х years, žilina turned to the heritage of ancient Russian icon painting, Italian and Northern Renaissance. For every phenomenon, a hero or a subject in his paintings is a story full of metaphorical similes, symbols, and allegories.

From early life he was surrounded by people with deep knowledge in various fields of art. Family Žilina before 1917 was closely associated with Moscow and St. Petersburg intelligentsia. It is the family played a crucial role in the professional life of the artist. The genius of žilina, manifested in childhood, notices his grandmother, half-sister of Valentin Serov. Her portraits, created by the master in the first years of married life, belong to the best works of the early period. The way Nina Zhilinskaya was key in the film "by the sea. Family" (1964, TG), and the work — first, which was associated with the formation of the individual brushwork, which determined all further work of the artist. Work created after trips to Italy, Holland, Belgium, žilina where I first saw original works by Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, "small Dutch". Imitating the old masters, žilina turned to a new technique of tempera painting on the gesso Board. Along with his wife Nina and children, Olga and Vasily, žilina turned to painting portraits of friends — artists Nikolai Tereshchenko, Helium Korzheva, Lavinia Bazhbeuk-Меликян, Peter Ossovsky and albert Papikyan.
In "Group portrait of students-скульпторов" (1964, Saratov state art Museum im. A. N. Radishchev), the wizard turned to the subject of the creative act. Among the images of the creative elite, created Zhilinskiy, occupies a special place picture "Gymnasts of the USSR" (1964-1965, RM) — one of the first samples, which manifested the characteristic features of a Mature artist. The artist refuses tonal painting, says a local color spots, emphasizing the line, silhouette and avoids shadows. His characters are quiet and contemplative, monumental, devoid of dynamics and bustle of everyday. Central hero compositions is Victor Lissitzky, a close friend of žilina, after retiring from the sport to become a professional painter.
One of the most heartfelt in the works of žilina — the image of the mother, Anastasia Feodorovna. Most brightly it is presented in the film "Under the old Apple tree" (1969, RM), dedicated to the tragic history of the artist's family. As the basis of žilina used the Board, preparing it according to the fashion icons, in the ark —-depth average field on the front side of the Board depicted his mother and children, and in the fields put the figures of the father, who was shot in 1937, and brother, who died at the front in 1944. Comparison of fruiting wood and women surrounded by the grandchildren becomes a metaphor for enduring vitality. Žilina subsequently many times appealed in painting and graphics to the image of his mother. The exhibition presents the work "Winter in the South" (1977, TG) and "Mother" (1977, TG).
Not just the heroes of the paintings in žilina became the second wife Venus with her little son, Nicholas. New, happy time of life dedicated to the painting "morning" (2001, private collection, Moscow) with images of a young wife and son.
Dmitry Zhilinsky as a brilliant portraitist was known not only in Russia. In 1990-е years, he has created a series of formal portraits of members of the Royal family of Denmark, represented in the throne rooms of the Royal Palace in Copenhagen. At the exhibition you can see the completed sketch of the portrait of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.
Looking at the characters in the portraits and paintings of žilina, revealing their role in the artist's works, one can observe the formation of an artist, shaping his distinctive style. Having started his career at the same time with the sixties, Dmitry Zhilinsky was able to take an Autonomous position and has created a unique gallery of portraits of the artistic elite of his era.
