Dmitry Stelletsky was born in January 1875 in Brest,-Литовске, in the family of a military engineer. In 1896 he entered the St. Petersburg Academy of arts, where he studied at the sculpture Department at G. R. Zaleman and V. L. Beklemishev. In 1904 lived in Paris, where he studied at the fine arts Academy R. Julien. Back in Russia, in 1904-1913 traveled through the ancient Russian cities and monasteries. The images of the saints in his works, not just repeating or varying motifs of icons and religious paintings; the artist's interest in works of masters of the Russian middle ages was deeper: he copied their methods of work, mixing paints according to old recipes.
In 1914 Stelletsky settled in France. He promoted the Russian culture was an indispensable participant of exhibitions of Russian art abroad, contributed to the creation of the Russian cultural-исторического Museum in Prague in 1935. In 1930-х Stelletsky executed brilliantly large, serious work — painted Orthodox Sergius Church in Paris. He also executed a number of icons in memory of those killed in the First world war. The last years of his life almost completely blind, he spent in a nursing home in Saint-Женевьев-де-Буа near Paris, was buried at the local cemetery.
a Central place at the exhibition in the Tula Museum is a series of allegories of the "Times of day" ("Evening", "Day", "Night", "Morning" @all mdas 1912). Besides it, the exhibition includes sketches of costumes and scenery for the Opera "Boris Godunov" (1908) modest Mussorgsky, "the snow maiden" (1911) N. Rimsky-Корсакова, "Prince Igor" (1908), A. P. Borodin, as well as the drama "Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich" (1908) by A. K. Tolstoy. In these sketches the influence of ancient art.
