In the XIX - early XX century, one of the most popular were porcelain dolls (they form the basis of the exhibition in Yaroslavl Museum-Preserve). In fact made of porcelain (mostly biscuit, ie, matte, unglazed) made a puppet head, complemented by glass eyes and real hair from parichkami or mohair. Doll body made of papier-mache and wood, as well as a composite mass. This manufacturing technique employed producers in various countries, including Germany, France and Russia. What is called the "puppet" is most characteristic for these toys perfectly matte, smooth "skin" pink-peach-colored, round puhloschekoe face disproportionately large, wide open eyes, a small, often ajar mouth, the body proportions of children with and details such as pits in the palms and soles. Some departure from this rule were "characteristic" dolls, which can also be seen on the show. Their faces express character or any particular emotion: laughter, smile and cry. The above doll stereotype appearance was as is generally accepted that you used to create completely different images. For example, if the foam of lacy frills, flounces and ruches, which is buried in doll-girl in sailor suit was changed, it turns out the boy doll. If a figure dressed in a fashionable woman's dress, the doll was transformed into a lady.

This original standard embodied the idealized representation of innocent adults and naive , pure and vulnerable child. By the way, exactly the same sentimental children's character types can be seen on New Year's and Christmas cards from the funds of the Yaroslavl museum and private collections of Hope Manerovoy Tutaeva. The same peculiar aesthetics and small figurines made of cotton with a face made of papier-mâché which decked the Christmas tree in the first half of the twentieth century.

Russian porcelain dolls factories and Kocheshkova Zhuravleva, and Shrayer Fingerguta and cooperative Dunaeva early XX century, miraculously preserved in the era of global political change - a special rarity, presented at the exhibition. You can not go past the two ladies rise about one meter, employed tea - is the "interior" of Russian-made dolls. Also in the exhibition includes a pair of wooden English dolls, dolls made of wax, composite, celluloid, some modern dolls .
