«Pool in a Harem" was executed in 1875 by order of Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich ( the future Emperor Alexander III), and exhibited at the Salon of 1876 under the name "Turkish woman in a bath" and later was one of the pieces that make up the permanent collection of French paintings of the XIX century. March 22, 2001 the picture was savagely cut from its frame and stolen from the halls of the Hermitage . In December 2006 she was discovered in Moscow, January 29, 2007 transferred to the Hermitage.

Jean-Leon Gerome (1824-1904) studied in Paris under Paul Delaroche, with whom he traveled to Italy. Returning to Paris, Jerome, within six months of visiting the studio of Charles Gleyre. It is probable that he instilled in his pupil a love for the east. Other sources were the works of Jerome pompeyanskie frescoes and paintings by Ingres on classical themes.
