In the body of Benoit Russian Museum opened an exhibition of Vladimir Volkov (1923-1987) from the series «Anniversaries», dedicated to the 85-th anniversary of the master. This is the first exhibition of the artist in the Russian Museum, which painting, drawing and sculpture. On display are paintings and graphic works from the cycle «Band», «Images», «Stairs», reflecting the main themes of creativity and belonging to the Russian Museum collection, as well as the plastic timber in the process of its development, starting from the sixties.

Vladimir Volkov was born Nov. 24, 1923 in Ulan-Ude. His creative way to begin is typical of the artist-Sixties. From 1938 to 1942 he studied at the Penza Art School. Once having reached eighteen years of age, Wolves went to the front, took part in the battle on the Kursk arch and was seriously injured. After the war he continued his service on Sakhalin Island, and only a few years later, in 1952 went to Leningrad, where joined the faculty of the Institute of Graphic Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Repin (teachers - A. Pahomov , Ovsiannikov L.), which brilliantly finished in 1958.

Before the VP Volkov career leader an opportunity to the Union of Artists. However, in 1965 he did not participate in official exhibitions, cease public activities due to the revision of views on art. Impetus to the latter was acquainted with the P. Kondratyev , V. Sterligov , TN Glebov , P. I. Basmanovym . Meeting with the second wave of avant-garde, and studying in the Russian museum's storerooms works P. Filonov and Kazimir Malevich had an enormous influence on the artist.

Years zatvornichestva have been a time of searching the truth. Volkov was looking for a solution to the problem form, the principles of understanding the space of the picture. Working on issues of contemporary plastic space, he mastered the stage of Cubism, Suprematism basis, continuing the tradition of the classical avant-garde. He was an artist of synthetic talents in his work co-existed in parallel, changing, two-and three-dimensional measurements, the central problem was the search for its architectural, of the whole. Since 1964 Volkov began a wooden sculpture ( «derevyashkami», as the artist himself called them), turned to the experience of folk art, experimenting with shapes and colors.

Views of works he had in his workshop, in a narrow circle of friends and associates, where there were M. Kondrat'ev, VV Sterligov, T. Glebova, EF Kovtun.

From 1955 Volkov long lived in the village of Bor, Novgorod region, which became for him a kind of workshop in the open air and the major theme of his art. The second theme of his work was the city, plastic formula which the artist was looking for throughout life.

first solo exhibition Volkova took place in 1990, after more than twenty years zatvornichestva and three years after the artist's death.
