Tate Gallery in London has recently opened an exhibition devoted to works of two major representatives of Russian avant-garde - Alexander Rodchenko (1891 -- 1956) and Lyubov Popova (1889-1924). The work of these artists is inextricably linked to the stylistic and theoretical foundations of Soviet Constructivism. They denied the idea of «art for art's sake», and felt that it should serve, and social needs. The exhibition in the Tate Gallery called «Rodchenko and Popova: Defining Constructivism» and combines the work of the two authors created in the period from 1917 till 1925.
October Revolution of 1917 became one of the greatest coups of the XX century. Its leaders sought to create a new society, which would be formed in accordance with their radical social program. Constructivism was to promote the development of new forms of art that would help build this new society. With the development of industry, representatives of the movement were influenced by modern machinery and technology and is often used in their materials from the field. Many constructivists do not consider themselves artists, but rather engineers - engineers, visual perception.
The works of Rodchenko and Popova, represented in the exhibit illustrate the impact that they have had on fashion, media, theater, film and design of the XX century. At the exhibition you can see the trailer for Rodchenko movies «Battleship Potemkin» Sergei Eisenstein (1925), «The sixth of the world» Dzigi Vertov (1926) and others.
The most interesting works also include a series of canvases by 1917-1921 years. These cycles Popova «Scenic architectonics» and «Space-power design», as well as works exhibited in 1921 at the exhibition «5 x 5 = 25», which Rodchenko and Popova, organized together with my colleagues Alexandra Exter , Vesnin Alex and Varvara Stepanova . These include the famous series of monochrome paintings Rodchenko «Pure red», «pure yellow color» and «Pure blue».
creative way Liubov Popova, unfortunately, ended in 1924 - the artist died of scarlet fever at the age of 35 years. But constructivism has continued to grow, with 1925, its representatives have taken a great interest of documentary photographic and filming in the streets. The perfect proof can be found in the works of Rodchenko, represented at the exhibition. In them the author skillfully captures the new Soviet architecture, as well as the appearance of key representatives of the movement of Constructivism.
exhibition at the Tate Gallery last until May 17 and then moved to the Greek State Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki, where the stay from 18 June to 20 September. And from 19 October 2009 till January 31, 2010 exhibition can be visited in the Spanish National Center of Art Reina Sofia in Madrid.
