The first retrospective of Emil Nolde in Paris
September 25 at the Grand Palais opened an exhibition devoted to works of one of the most famous German expressionists
From 25 September to 19 January in Paris' Grand Palais will host an exhibition dedicated to one of the most prominent representatives of German expressionism - Emil Nolde (Emil Nolde). Now, some paintings and graphic works by Nolde, we can see in Moscow: Pushkin Museum in them the Pushkin passes exhibition of works by members of the group« bridge »(Die Brücke) . Creativity is always associated with Nolde «Bridge», although a member of this group of artists has less than two years.
Artist Name - Emil Hansen. He was born in 1867 in the village of Nolde, near the German-Danish border. In 1902, after marriage, he took the name of the village as an alias in order to emphasize its relationship with the places of origin. The artist grew up in a very religious family, but, as is usually the case in remote rural areas, the Christian faith of the family Hansen closely coincided with Paganism. In his works Nolde sought to express the closeness to nature, the proximity to the sources - on his paintings, we see a flaming sunsets over the North Sea and employed a heavy daily work of farmers, Christian symbols and the grotesque characters of the ancient Nordic mythology. Nolde, unlike other artists of his time, such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (Ernst Ludwig Kirchner), Lionel Fayninger (Lyonel Feininger) and the Italian futurists, is not loved to depict a modern city. The harsh nature and the phantasmagoric world of ancient pagan spirits were much closer to him than the big cities with their high-rise buildings, factories and cars. Therefore, it is closer to the younger artists in the group «bridge» - Kirchner, Erich Hekkelem (Erich Heckel), Max Pehshtaynom (Max Pechstein) and Karl Schmidt-Rottlufom (Karl Schmidt-Rottluff), who preferred to live and work in the countryside. In addition, in the works of Nolde «mostovtsev» attracted «storm paints» - bright spots of color on his paintings were the same brand name «Bridge», as a cornered «Egyptian» figurines Otto Muller (Otto Müller) and the broken lines form Erich Hekkelya. Nolde was fond of «primitive» art, as well as the creativity of the main precursor expressionism: ugly grotesque face on his canvases reminiscent of James Ensore (James Ensor), ghostly figures in color mirage - of Edvard Munch (Edvard Munch), a colorful vortices - about Vincent van Goge (Vincent van Gogh).
Creativity Nolde and members of the group «bridge», a «proximity to the roots», loved German nationalists first decades of XX century. Nolde answered his love: in the early 1920's, he even became a member of NSDAP. But it is not saved it, when Hitler came to power: his paintings and engravings, as well as the product of «mostovtsev» and other prominent modernists were declared «degenerative art». German museums have seized 1 052 Nolde works - a record for the artist, punishable Nazis. Artist banned the arts, but he still continued to create small watercolors, which was christened «unwritten pictures». After the war, the artist received the Medal of Honor - the main civilian honor bestowed in the country. Ambiguous choice, given the fact that Nolde are often expressed anti-Semitic views and afford uncomplimentary remarks to Jewish artists. But after the war expressionism in general was in Tabor by German authorities, and the stained reputation of a talented artist decided to close their eyes.
The exhibition at the Grand Palais exhibited 90 paintings by Nolde, including the famous poliptih «Life of Christ», provided the Fund Nolde (d. Zeebyull, Germany), as well as 70 watercolors, prints and drawings. Most of the works of Nolde affect enchanting colors. As the artist himself: «I love music paints. Paints bring me happiness. And it seems to me that they love my hands ».
