The Basel Museum of Art opened an exhibition «Haim Soutine and Modernism», which will last until July 6. In comparison with the works of his more famous contemporaries, Amedeo Modigliani and Marc Chagall, the work of Haim Soutine yet destined to be a truly «public« spectator. Museum of Art in Basel, has prepared a broad overview of the master, where the revaluation of the views of Soutine as an artist is represented in works that reflect the main stages and trends in the art of the twentieth century.

Haim Soutine was born in Byelorussia in in 1893, and his desire to become an artist in the family met with great resistance, partly due to religious beliefs. His decision is still to study art in Vilna showed great courage and bravery of the artist. In 1913, fate brought him to Paris, then capital of the European avant-garde. Like many other artists of Jewish origin, being in Paris, he was from the beginning found refuge in one of the famous shops «Ulya», and later in the workshop Falger Cité (Cité Falguière), where his neighbors were Chagall, Modigliani and Lipszyc. With the exception of this small number of people who lived Soutine is closed.

At the same time as cubism, futurism, Dada, surrealism and other artistic currents (some of them were born in Paris) was distributed in Europe, Soutine, avoid direct impact of all these varieties of modernism, has developed its own, distinct and very tight style, marked by great strength and depth of feeling. In his paintings voltage deteriorating prospects supplemented exaggeratedly distorted shape of the figure and enhance the powerful and expressive brush strokes. Founded in Soutine painting innovative capacity has an impact on art throughout the twentieth century, in particular, namely, his style was one of the founders of Art of Francis Bacon and Willem de Kuninga.

Paradoxically, Soutine was equally visions and traditionalists, he was interested in one of the few major achievements of modernism - the freedom to choose the subject of the image, he was a lifelong devotion to the triad remain unchanged genres: still lifes, landscapes and portraits. Indeed, no subject in Soutine paintings, which we would not have found in the art of the XVII century. Sometimes it seems that the time-tested traditional styles as it gave him confidence that he was so necessary in order to join the venture as an artist in this uncharted area.

The display of 60 works of Soutine belongings from the fund Basel forwarder and art connoisseur Karl They Oberstega (1883-1969), in the durable goods in the Museum of Art Basel.

The exhibition offers a very deep and meaningful comparison of Soutine paintings to the works of his friends - Modigliani, Chagall, or Utrillo, as well as shows the artist in the context of works of other masters such as Picasso, Munch, or marriage. The choice of works clearly shows that Soutine solved the same artistic goals, and that his contemporaries, despite the fact that the uniqueness and originality of the creative ways in which it precludes the possibility of art in any direction. The Basel exhibition offers a new way of Soutine as an artist, who became a central figure in the intersection of the most diverse trends of his time.

Art Museum in Basel is the world's largest collection of works of father and son Golbeynov; among the most significant examples of Renaissance works in the collection should be noted works Kondrada Vitsa, Martin Shongauera, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Mathias Grunewald.
