A masterpiece by Mark Rothko at the may auction at Christie's
Within the evening auction Christie's on may 13 in new York will be put on canvas by Mark Rothko "No. 36 (Black stripe)" with an estimate of 30-50 million dollars
Christie's auction house reported that the leadership is located in Baden-Бадене Museum Frieder Burda entrusted him with the sale dated the year of 1958 masterpiece Mark Rothko "No. 36 (Black stripe)". The Burda Museum is considered one of the largest and most respected private collections of works of art of the era of modernism and modernity in Europe. This work, on which three contrasting color rectangular area flicker on a red background, is typical of the Mature art of Rothko and perfectly reflects the taste Frieder Burda as collectioner@
Painting "No. 36 (Black stripe)" was written in 1958, when the artist worked on the so-called shamovsky series — a cycle of works that were to adorn the walls of the Four Seasons restaurant in Manhattan, and are now in the Tate Modern. The Frieder Burda acquired the painting "No. 36 (Black stripe)" over thirty years ago. Since then, she has never exhibited for sale, but has participated in major exhibitions dedicated to the works of Rothko, worldwide, including the national Museum of Western art Tokyo, the National gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, the Art gallery of New South Wales in Sydney and Ernst Beyeler Foundation, where in 2001, was a landmark retrospective of the artist's works. Estimated value of the painting, which will be offered for sale as part of the evening auction Christie's "Postwar and contemporary art" may 13, 2015, 30-50 million dollars. The proceeds from the sale of paintings will go to the Fund involved in the development of the Museum Frieder Burda@
Frieder Burda: "the Decision to sell was carefully thought through, but still difficult because it is hard for me to part with the work, for me having such a deep personal meaning. It's an outstanding work, which occupies a special place in the entire meeting, but that's why it fell a choice that will help us to implement a number of long-term programmes on updating and improving the collection. This will also contribute to a carefully chosen time to sell".
Brett Gorvi, head of the international Department of postwar and contemporary art Christie's: "It's very emotional work, Rothko created at the peak of his career. By the time of the creation of Rothko's paintings have already formed a new language to the treatment of color, which formed the basis for further creativity and shamovsky series in particular. In terms of color, this work is a landmark. It used shades of orange, black and red, which symbolized for the artist's blood and passion. The fact that this picture appears on the market for the first time in thirty years, along with its rarity and outstanding provenance, will, no doubt, contribute to an active struggle between collectors over the ownership of this unique masterpiece."
Painting "No. 36 (Black stripe)" was written at a turning point for Mark Rothko. Despite the fact that over the next 12 years, his work is actively developed, becoming, according to most researchers, the increasingly gloomy, in their richness and significance, nothing can compare with his work 1950-х. By 1958 Rothko was not only at the peak of their creative powers, but at the top of popularity. He was equally successful both in financial terms and in relation to the favor of critics, and in light of the recent death of Jackson Pollock, he even gained fame as the greatest living American khudozhnikov@
Famous collection Frieder Burda has about 1000 works of art. To ensure access to collection wider public Mr. Burda approached architect Richard Meier with a request for the construction of the building of the Museum in Baden-Бадене, which was opened in 2004. The Museum is established in 1998 by the Foundation Frieder Burda. The work of Mark Rothko repeatedly became the exhibit held at the Museum from 2002 to 2008 exhibitions. During the last decades there has been a reorientation of the Museum's policy towards creativity of the younger generation of contemporary artists. The sale of works by Rothko in favorable market conditions will help the Fund and, accordingly, the Museum in the implementation of a number of exhibition programs, as well as in the acquisition of works by young artists. Offering for sale of the painting "No36 (Black stripe)" in no way will affect the bulk of the collection, including works by prominent representative of the German expressionist max Beckmann, late works by Pablo Picasso and outstanding examples of post-war German iskusstva@
