« Christmas hymn " Rossetti ( 6.4 million pounds ) - one of the earliest works in his series of portraits of women Venetian-style dresses , playing musical instruments . This oil painting on wood, combines the basic principles of the nascent English aestheticism : feminine beauty , music and fashion for exotic scenery and costumes. The heroine of "Christmas Songs" is playing at the two- mandolin , her head thrown back, mouth open , she sings. Ringlets of dark hair bonded helical hairpin decorated with seed pearls . On the neck - an emerald necklace , suitable to the color of her eyes , and crimson lining dress emphasizes the blush of her lips . On the picture frame is the text of a Christmas song that she performs . For this portrait Rossetti posed Helen Smith - laundress , the artist met in Chelsea in 1863. The artist is not just writing it , emphasizing its appeal. Apparently , Helen was not indifferent to material gain from posing artist and saw in his new craft to lift themselves out of poverty , which promised her profession laundress .
« Christmas Carols " - one of the the latest and the best products with the image of Helen Rossetti . The painting her face almost touching with a silver icon " Virgin Mary with Child " on the background of lush tapestry .
Rossetti Creativity can be interpreted as an infinite admiration of female beauty , and " Christmas Carols " , as one of the most important works of Rossetti, put up for public auction , it takes a special place among them .
First Lord Leverhalm , William Hesketh Lever, bought " Christmas Carols " at auction in 1917. Prior to his work owned by a wealthy Scottish collector and one of the main backers of the artist George Ray (1817-1902) , the collection of which was about 17 works by Rossetti. At the time of purchase Lever were already two paintings Rossetti, and when the opportunity presented itself , he did not hesitate added to his collection, and this masterpiece . Although many works from the collection Lever were transferred to a private museum in Port Sunlight , "Christmas Songs" has never left the estate Thornton .
« Tuscan girl " by William Holman Hunt was written in the town of Fiesole , near Florence , in winter 1869. The canvas on the background of the Tuscan landscape depicts a peasant girl with a dove on his shoulder. Theme song connects it with the works of Rossetti's work : the girl is singing bird. In Fiesole Hunt found models for his portraits of the villagers. Judging by the three surviving sketches , paintings plot was suggested by Hunt accidentally peeped street scene . The artist liked to portray children and believed that his children's portraits are promising in commercial terms and no worse than similar works by Sir John Everett Milles . In the " Tuscan girl " Hunt is also drawn to the theme of traditional folk crafts. In choosing the age of the heroine , there are social implications : this picture is about the lives of children who have to work . In England at that time peasant children in this age group lived in a much more severe conditions. The Italian girls accentuate the gleam in her eyes, she looks neat , healthy and contented life , what is symbolically indicated by the image of a dove .
« Tuscan girl " was first exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877 , where it was exhibited in the main hall . Critics have taken the work favorably. At the auction, the picture will be presented in the original gilt frame decorated with medallions with stylized daisies ( 5.3 million pounds). Among its first owners - John Francis Austen , a relative of writer Jane Austen. In his collection , " The Tuscan Girl" remained until 1931, when it was at the auction bought the Second Lord Leverhalm . Since then, the picture has not left the French cabinet estates Thornton. William Lever Holm was the second generation of the family, who owned the paintings Hunt, and this acquisition is the most important contribution to the collection. Other works from the collection of Lord Hunt Leverhalma were transferred to the Lady Lever Art Gallery at Port Sunlight . This picture has never left the family collection .
second Lord Leverhalm also purchased the work of Tissot " On the boat " ( 3.2 million pounds). Marvelous painting was purchased at the gallery Leicester in 1933. The painting depicts a group of people on the deck of a yacht on the background of masts and ropes neighboring marina .
Tissot came to London in the spring of 1871 and was fascinated by the Thames . His attention was riveted to the busy shopping area of the Tower Pier and Greenwich , and pictures posted here have enjoyed enormous success at the London audience .
In the scene , " On the boat ," the author accurately conveys the psychological state of the characters. By 1873, when the picture was written " On the boat ", the artist is increasingly focused on the psychological logic of his work : painting convincingly conveys a troubled situation on the deck and the tension characters. Inconsistency idea that a walk on a yacht should be a pleasant pastime , and of the scene only reinforces the psychology and the ambiguity of this work .
