Picasso set a new record!
yesterday in New York passed evening Christie's auctions in the category "Art of Impressionism and Modernism" . Their general result amounted to 335,548,000 dollars. Collection of Sidney Frances Brody as a whole yielded 224,177,500 dollars. Of the 69 offered lots were sold in 1956, ie 81 per cent. Statistics in monetary terms amounted to 86 percent.
Top-lot auction was canvas by Pablo Picasso's "Nude on a background of green leaves and bust", which was sold for 106.48 million dollars and was thus not only the most expensive work of the masters, but also the most expensive piece of art in the world.
This large-scale portrait of the artist's mistress Marie-Therese Walter (1932) is widely recognized as one of the most significant works by Picasso. The portrait, executed in rich blue, pink and green, is a complex piece with a deep sensual overtones, which serves as a vivid evidence of the romantic feelings of the artist against his young muse.
