The earliest of them date from the time when training in the Studio of L. E. Dmitriev-Кавказского, followed by the work of the early 1900-х years, things created during journeys to Germany and Italy, watercolours of the time of industrialization, landscapes of the Crimea, and patterns 1940-50-х devoted to A. S. Pushkin and M. Lermontov, — beautiful landscapes Michael and the Caucasus, genre scenes from the life of Russian poets. Very late works are lyrical, they saved the parts of the provincial estates as the memory about the past of Russia and its pre-revolutionary life, and the return to the past and farewell to the best years of his life.

In the preparation of the catalog were used materials from the archives of RGALI, the Russian Museum, private archive. For the first time published photos of N. Shestopalova I. during the training period in the Studio of Dmitriev-Кавказского, minutes of meetings of the Commission for the purge of the AHR, where the case N. I. Shestopalova. For the first time published a list of exhibitions (starting in 1908), which were attended by Nikolay Ivanovich Shestopalov.
