In preparation for the exhibition was given a picture restorers, "What is truth?". The existence of a latent image on the canvas art guessed long ago: at this point in his memoirs Tatyana Tolstoy, the daughter of Leo Tolstoy. There was also a small photograph of the picture "Mercy", which was published in 1903 by Gay, Jr. in the directory. Painting "Mercy" was written in 1879 and the following year exhibited at the 8th exhibition of the Association traveling art exhibitions. But critics reacted to the "Mercy" is negative, and 10 years later, in 1890, he used the canvas to work on new picture - "What is truth?". The work on recognition of the old paint layer revealed another surprise. Under the top layer of paint were also found earlier versions of the picture "Crucifixion».

«What is truth?" is not the only picture that Nikolai Ge copied. For example, the painting "Christ in Gethsemane," which became Pavel Tretyakov, the artist also refined. He adjusted his turn heads and hands of Christ.
