Drenched with sulfuric acid "Sorrowful Mother of God" Durer finally restored
The picture can be seen in the Dresden Picture Gallery
«Grieving Mother of God" by Albrecht Durer (Albrecht Dürer), more than twenty years ago, suffered at the hands of a mentally ill Visitor Munich Alte Pinakothek, finally restored and displayed in public. The picture can be seen in the Dresden Picture Gallery, where it (the first time in five centuries!) Is demonstrated as part of the first songs of the artist's altar.
Durer wrote "The Seven Sorrows of Our Lady" in 1496, when he was total 25. Perhaps the work was commissioned by the Elector of Saxony Frederick III the Wise, and was intended for his palace church in Wittenberg. The group divided, presumably, in the era of the Reformation. The seven paintings depicting grief, went to the painter Lucas Cranach the Younger, whose father was a court painter. In 1588, the heirs have sold works by Cranach in the collection of Saxony in Dresden, but later they entered the collection Art Gallery.
central panel 1.8-meter track - "Sorrowful Mother of God" - was in the Benedictine monastery Boyern (Bavaria). In 1804, after the secularization of the monasteries, she was sent to Munich. Now picture belongs to the Alte Pinakothek.
There was also a similar band called "Seven Joys of Our Lady, which was lost; idea of it we can get only from drawings Cranach workshop, met in the middle of XVI century.
In 1934, German art historian Ernst Buchner (Ernst Buchner) first stated that Dresden panel and "Sorrowful Mother of God" constitute a single composition. But put them together only now - to prevent the Second World War, the subsequent division of Germany, when Dresden and Munich were on different sides of the Berlin Wall, and finally, many years to restore the picture after the barbaric attack.
In April 1988 a certain Hans-Joachim Bohlmann (Hans-Joachim Bohlmann) doused with sulfuric acid, five works by Durer, exhibited in the Pinakothek. Mutilated "Sorrowful Mother of God" was treated for the longest time - 21 years. Restorers began to work almost immediately after the attack, but a layer of lacquer painting was thin and acid quickly seeped through the colorful coating, reaching the ground. It was neutralized with ion exchange resins. This process is very complex and in addition demanded the restoration of other "victims" maniac - so work on the restoration of the panel lasted so long.
As to the remaining panels songs, they restored in 1958. Recently, scientists have studied them using X-ray and infrared reflexograph. The results showed that Ernst Buchner was right: "Dun Lady" is really once was with these pictures a whole.
«Dun Lady" will be exhibited in Dresden until November 7. And then she would go to his home - in Munich.
