Miroslaw Balka - a sculptor, and in some ways continuing the case for their parents. His grandfather was the masons, and the father is engaged in manufacturing of tombstones. He was born in 1958 and grew up on the outskirts of Warsaw. His works have been exhibited for the first time in Britain in the 1980's at the new European sculpture, entitled Possible Worlds, held in the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art) and the Serpentine Gallery. The list of his merits in the number participating in the Venice Biennale in 1993 and solo exhibition at the Tate Gallery in 1994. Unlike many of his contemporaries, the beam is still living and working in his native town, the studio transformed into a family home in Otvotske near Warsaw. «He is one of the most significant contemporary artists of his generation», - believes director of Tate Modern, Vicente Todoli (Vicente Todoli). «We would quickly see that it is unique to the hall Not to our gallery».
Miroslaw Balka early work is clearly figurative - for example, the statue itself to the First Communion (which shows the impact on the author's Catholic education), or sculpture Shepherds in the cloak of fixtures. Then he began to create sculptures out of soap, human hair, old linoleum, pine needles and even the living larvae. He covered the walls of the exhibition halls with gray ash, and even exhibited drawings, charred because of the accidental fire in his studio. In his works he uses the smells and sounds, and even silence, and recently it has also often complements the installation videokompozitsiyami.
In the works of Polish sculptor, there is something both of minimalism, and conceptualism. But even more they are linked to real places and events. In his works, he often turns to the topic of World War II and participation in Poland. For example, now in the White Cube Gallery hosts an exhibition of his works devoted to the concentration camp at Treblinka.
In art Miroslaw Balka, there is something harsh and bleak. The proportion of black humor is often added to his works painful and tragic tones. In doing so, the artist manages, on the one hand, to avoid the platitudes, but on the other - to avoid the explicit epatazha.
