Painter, graphic artist, set designer

From a peasant family. He graduated from rural school in the Yaroslavl province (1892). Worked in a stationery shop, shop signs in St. Petersburg. About 1895 went to Valaam, became a novice in the monastery, was engaged in icon painting.

In 1897 he returned to St. Petersburg. Attended classes at the Drawing school of the Society for the encouragement of arts, and private Studio Л. Е. Дмитриева-Кавказского. As a student he studied at the Higher art school of painting, sculpture and architecture under the Imperial Academy of arts (1901-1909) in the Studio И. Е. Репина. In 1909, for the painting "Icarus" received the title of artist.

Lived in St. Petersburg (Petrograd). In 1912 he travelled to Europe, has long worked in Paris, studied in the classes of the Munich Academy of arts. Wrote songs genre content, portraits, landscapes, still lifes; was close to the Wanderers, the masters of the Union of Russian artists. Author of painting works: "Gypsy", "Rural children", "Saturday", "And in September — goodbye love!", "Yaroslavl Baba" (all — 1910-е), "Ф. И. Шаляпин in the role of Boris Godunov" (1916) and others.He was awarded prizes at the contests. А. И. Куинджи for the painting "the babysitter" (1910) and "the Lady in black" (1913); got 1-ю prize of the Society for the encouragement of artists in genre of painting, for the painting "the swing" (1911), the jubilee prize of Princess Eugenia of Oldenburg for his painting "Feast in the village" (1914).

Created portraits of members of the Royal family. During the First world war he was mobilized and Captured by the order of the Commission executed portrait sketches of the generals of the Russian army (1916). In 1916 performed a series of pencil sketches and two picturesque portrait Ф. И. Шаляпина.

Member of-учредитель Community of artists (1908), member and Exhibitor of the Yaroslavl art society (1910-е), society of artists to them. А. И. Куинджи (1917). Participated in the Spring exhibitions in the halls of IAH (1910-е; a member of the jury of the Spring exhibition), 1-й state free exhibition of works of art (1919) in Petrograd, 44-й the exhibition TPHV in Moscow and Petrograd (1916), art exhibition "Lotus" in Rostov-на-Дону (1919), the international art exhibition in Munich (1913).
