was born in a noble family. Graduated from the 2-th Kiev Gymnasium, where he received initial skills in painting under the guidance of NM Soshenko. Advice of Shevchenko. In 1861-1868 he studied at the IAH in AP Bogolyubov. During the period of study received all existing academic awards: in 1862 - a small silver medal for the scenery, in 1863 - a large silver medal, in 1866 - a small gold medal. In the summer of 1864 and 1865 left in the Crimea on the sketches. In 1866, he studied the monuments of Moscow architecture. In 1867, he traveled to Kiev and Tauride province in 1868 was in Finland. In 1868, three landscape with views of the Crimea has been awarded a large gold medal, received the title of class artist 1-th degree and the right of a pensioner's travel abroad for three years.

In 1869-1872 - retired IAH in France and Switzerland. In 1872 he returned to St. Petersburg, received from the Council of the Academy permission for the extension of pensioner's detention in Russia for three years. In 1874, for the painting "Before the squall," "Sunset", "Swamp", "In the Steppe", "Evening", "Sowing," "Forest felling", "Sands" was awarded the title of academician. In 1875 traveled to Italy. In 1876, for painting "haymaking", "Mol in Pozzuoli", "Morning on the Bay of Naples" and "On the sea before the storm" approved at the rank of professor of landscape painting. Among his students: NS Samokish, P. A. Levchenko and others. From 1878 - supernumerary member of IAH.

In 1881 he made a trip to the Caucasus, in the 1880 - 1890 periodically visited the Crimea. In 1900-1902 he lived in Kiev, where he took an active part in the work of the Kiev school of drawing. NI Murashko, was a member of Arts Council School. He became one of the organizers of the Kiev School of Art, opened in 1901.

exhibited his works at exhibitions in the halls of IAH (1868-1888, with interruptions), the Society of exhibitions of works of art (1876-1882), Saint-Petersburg Society of Artists (1891-1904), the World Exhibition in Philadelphia (1876) and Paris (1878), the All-Russia Art and Industry exhibition in Moscow (1882).

From 1909 he lived in Italy (buried in Kiev).

In 1916, Russia held a memorial exhibition Orlovsky (jointly with NK Pimonenko).

Orlovsky - one of the greatest Russian landscape painters of the second half of the XIX century, the representative of academic art. In his work was influenced AIKuindzhi. The works of the artist's inherent severity of composite construction, care to detail, careful attention to the effects of natural light.

Orlovsky works are in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Scientific Research Museum of Russia Academy of Arts, State Museum of Ukrainian Art in Kiev and others.
