Biography

DOBROKOVSKY Mechislav Vasilievich

May 25 (June 7), 1895 (Vidzy, Petrovsk province) — July 1, 1938 (Moscow)

Graphic artist, book and magazine illustrator, painter, poster artist

Dobrokovsky studied at Peterhof gymnasium of the Emperor Alexander II, graduated from the Admiralty warrant officer school; he was awarded the St. George medal of the 4th degree. He studied at the Military Medical Academy (until 1915); he was interested in painting and poetry of V. Mayakovsky, in early 1910s — in English seascape painting, but later he renounced classic forms and took a great interest in futurism.

Dobrokovsky was called up for military service, and as a midshipman served at the Baltic Sea. In 1917–1918 he campaigned famous The Ice March from Helsingfors (now — Helsinki) to Petrograd.

Until 1917 Dobrokovsky lived in Helsingfors. In 1921 he worked as a journalist in Persia (now — Iran) in the city Resht, published his drawings and caricatures in newspapers, collaborated with the local paper Red Iran and the magazine Sailor. He became friends with the Russian poet V. Khlebnikov and tried to translate his poetry into the figurative language.

In the autumn of 1921, Dobrokovsky together with the disbanded Persian Red army moved to Vladikavkaz, where he painted a lot from life. He worked for the newspaper Gorskaya Pravda (“Highland Truth”) and the magazine Gorskaya Mysl (“Highland Thought”) and designed the feature story by A. Kosterin In the Caucasus Mountains 1917–1920.

In the spring of 1922, Dobrokovsky moved to Moscow, where he continued to work as an artist for newspapers and magazines; his drawings were published in the newspaper Krasny Voin (“Red Warrior”, 1922–1923) and the magazine Yuny Kommunist (“Young Communist”).
